Color behind step down grills?

Hi all, 

I have seen the metal behind the grill on 51-53 stepdowns be painted flat black or body color.  What is preferred or correct?

Black. I'm not sure about the gloss level, but I prefer a shiny high gloss... it's easier to clean too.

I have a couple of NOS pieces that were flat black..

Original paint didn't stay glossy for long.  Try a little cleaner/polish and see what you get.
