When attaching the flywheel to the crankshaft flange on my 254, do I need to silicone seal it in place as well as bolting it on at 40-45 foot pounds torque ?

Yes. I use Indian Head Gasket Shellac. It is a dark brown color, with a brush or dauber connected to the lid, and smells a bit like tar.0

Thank you, I'll get some.
It's something that's actually available in England, which makes a pleasant change from the usual situation with car-related products !0 -
I have never used a sealant, nor experienced any leakage at the flange.0

It is important to have a good gasket between the flywheel and pressure plate, certainly. But don't use too much sealant. Just enough to soak into the gasket material and get a perfect seal. You don't want any surplus squeezing out into the clutch.0
