‘54 Hudson Hornet AMP Light On

Hello all first post from a new Hudson owner 👋 I have a 1954 Hudson Hornet 2dr Convertible that I got from my Grandpa in NY. I’m 37 now but have always loved the Hornet since they were always around as a kid and just so happens my wife fell for them as well!! The car is now in FL and we got it registered today. It runs like a dream but the AMP light is on all the time and I have no idea where to start and don’t want to mess up the 6V system. Everything seems to operate fine and I keep a tender on it in the garage but I don’t want to get stranded on a cruise so where do I start? Thanks for any help in advance!

  • Find a true alternator shop that knows something about generators. You'll know you found the right one if they ask you to bring in BOTH the generator and regulator to test them as a pair. The shop can adjust the regular and service the generator. They'll probably need to do little more than clean it and put it on the hone for a few seconds.

In addition to SuperWasps recommendations... your car’s wiring is 57 years old.. check all
of it for insulation breakdown and or shorts.  The last time I used a 6 volt generator/regulator and the AMP light was on all the time the wires to the regulator were insulation compromised.  Fixing the wiring; fixed the AMP light, BUT the brushes in the Generator were also failing so it got an overhaul and the regulator was readjusted.  Good luck. 54 Convertible- wonderful automobiles.  Take pity on us... post s picture.😊

Thank you for the feedback I will inspect the wiring and if I don’t see anything obvious I will find a shop that can look at it. I just got it registered last week and gave it a bath today!! I need to get it out for some good pics.

If the light is on, the generator is not charging.   could be a simple matter of dirty contacts in the voltage regulator, but most likely a problem with the generator.   Try shorting the field terminal to ground and see if the light goes out.   If so, the generator is okay.
