I guess the "buoy" is technically the "float", but generally people replace the entire sending unit with float.

The older senders usually have holes in the floats which are attached by the wire bail used to drive the gauge resistor

I bought one of those cheapo "universal" senders on eBay just to get the wire arm and plastic float.
I removed the old arm and fossilized cork float from my original sender unit and replaced them with the universal arm and float - I cut and bent the arm to the same size and shape as the original.
The sender and the gauge seem to work OK now but I'm always careful to keep the tank topped up with fuel just in case I'm not actually getting an entirely accurate reading.

Just search eBay for "Universal Fuel Sender". Some of the more expensive ones look just like the Schuster senders.
