53 Hornet Twin H Hydramatic question

Ok I’ve been neglecting this question for a long time .
My hydramatic is one of the biggest question marks in my journey on getting my car running how I want it too.

Specs : 53 308 twin H Dual range hydramatic
(1956-7 Twin H manifold)

Here go the questions

1.2-3 gear shifts really hard (like the whole back end dips a good 3-6 inches ) how is this adjusted?

2. I can’t get the car to idle smoothly and I’m always hearing how smooth Hudson 6s are. I have the carburetors tuned and set to 1000rpm at N idle , drop it into 4 and it goes to 800rpm but is very rough almost like it’s frighting the transmission fluid. Does the transmission need sea foam or a renewal formulation of some sort? Or is it more of a transmission fluid purge?

3. The idle should be set to 800 at a mile high correct ? (In N)

Thanks a great deal in advance!

  • Have used SeaFoam on several cars, a '97 & including the '53 with amazing results.  Put in transmission and run for 50 miles; then drain ALL fluid from Transmission. Put in new fluid with about 1/4 of a can of new Seafoam.
This will not 'cure' all tranny problems but will remove varnish, etc. and clean it up. BUT,it has to be circulated in transmission.  If fluid is dark grey or black then it definitely needs cleaned up~~~ Think my idle is around 700 or so, but I am not a mile high.
Make sure all mounts are in good shape; doesn't sound like it?
  • I’ve heard that it is almost impossible to drain the whole trans without disassemble. It just a hoax or it it truth ?
    12 quarts correct?
Dex merc III? What comparable to type A?
motor mounts are still fairly soft

  • The torus has a plug on it and you can drain the fluid from that as well as the plug on the trans pan. Then refill with Dex III

I suggest drop the pan and clean the Mesh Filter as well as drain the Torus. I prefer a solid shift rather than soft slip shift.
  • @Ol racer The shift from 2-3 is so hard I’m wondering if I’m gonna blow up a ujoint. It’s not a nice firm shift a more like I got rear ended.

First thing is adjust the throttle rod to transmission. These cars are " touchy" to
this adjustment. Check for looseness in linkage. A 1/4" can make a big difference.
  • @lostmind My throttle linkage is maxed out on that adjustment. 1-2 and 3-4 is fairly smooth .
ive tried to give myself some adjustment room at the transmission by moving the linkage down there. should the carb links be adjusted to push the linkage back ?

The manual shows the adjustments and the sequence.  The Hydramatic throttle linkage MUST be adjusted first.  It is establishes the fundamental shifting point.
