Camshaft Availability

Does anyone know of someplace that has camshafts that are orderable.  I tried Russ Maas today and they said they dont have any in stock nor really plan on it.

Thanks,

Ray

You might want to mention which year and engine you're speaking about.
  • Taking a '56 with hydraulic lifters and replacing them with solid lifters and having to get a cam profiled (or new) for solid instead of hydraulic lifters. Ideally I'd like to get a 306344A or 309742A.

Isky will regrind your stock Cam in couple different profiles. They need a Core though. www.iskycams.com, 310 217 9232.. There are a few other Cam companies too, however I dont know those...
  • How about a 309742?

Crane used to have some as I have one new in a box.
  • @50C8DAN

What number is that cam in the box and do you have Crane's internal part or profile numbers?  It might be on the box.

    Thanks!

  • Lance,

I am trying to avoid using new lifters with a used cam, but will ring you if I hit some dead ends.

Their used to be a place in Tacoma, WA called Delta Cam.
They had a heck of an inventory at one time...
Not sure if they are still surviving.

There are a bunch of places to get a cam re-ground & some will also add material back onto the lobes before putting a new grind on it.

Ol Racer knows his stuff & as he said Isky has numerous cam profiles from mild to full blown Bonneville cams for 308’s & even 212’s.  Delta Cams is another source.  I believe it was Egge who added material, then cut the stock profile back in a buddies 254ci straight 8 cams a few years ago.

My advice would be to definitely get a performance cam to wake these old motors up!  Btw, has anyone found a way to adapt a modern roller lifter to an old 212ci or a 254ci engine?

    email from Oregon Camshaft re-grinding---

Yes we do grind those cams mostly back to stock specs.  We do have some of the popular performance grinds available for them also.  If you have a performance profile that you like and we don’t have it, we can make a copy off of an existing cam and reproduce it on other cams. Thanks

I will get my performance cam out tomorrow hopefully and if someone wants to pay to send it to Oregon Camshaft - they are a good bunch to make copies I have no problem in loaning it out.  I doubt I have the card that came with it any longer.  It was a Crane I believe.

  • Thanks all.  I currently have a lead on a regrind.  It was a bit disheartening to call comp, isky, and crane and all I got was "Well do you have the spec card or the order number? We can't do anything with those part numbers."

It all works out in the end however.  Again thanks for all your efforts and hopefully someone in the future looking for a cam will find the thread.

Kerry did Oregon say they had Hudson cores to grind from to make the duplicates?

note from Ken at Oregon Cams-

These are the most popular L-head performance profiles that we have for the Hudson

     #223

     218/218 @ .050”, 244/244 adv(.020”), 266/266 @ lash, .331”/.331” lift, lash .016”/.016”

     #1581

     222/222 @ .050”, 249/249 adv, 270/270 @ lash, .372”/.372” lift, lash .010”/.010”

     #509i

     226/226 @ .050”, 250/250 adv, 264/264 @ lash, .366”/.366” lift, lash .014”/.014”

     #509e

     227/227  @ .050”, 251/251 adv, 266/266 @ lash, .368”/.368” lift, lash .014”/.014”

     #714

     243/243 @ .050”, 270/270 adv, .406”/.406” lift, .018”/.018” lash

     #1955

    218/218 @ .050”, 276/276 adv(.006”), .348”/.348” lift, hyd lifter

The #1581 is by far the most popular grind we do for the Hudson, it seems to work very well.  The cost to regrind your core to any of the performance grinds is $130, to grind back to stock is $99.  We also re-profile the lifters for $5.50 each.

     Thanks
    Ken

  • I know Bill Jenks passed away in 2009 but he worked for Mooneyes out of Southern California for forever and he did a few 331040 cams for me.   I don’t know who took over for him or if they even regrind cams anymore but it’s worth a phone call at least.
  • Ken,

That is awesome info to have at large for folks looking for it.  Thanks so much for gathering it.

    Andrew,

Thanks for another lead to follow up on.

    Take care all,
