Trick to getting transmission gear indicator back into position?

Hi all, 

Hydramatic, 51 Hornet sedan.  Gear indicator came off this car but now it will not go back on.  The top part of the assembly will not go over the pin.  It can not go deep enough (towards firewall) to drop on to it.  Is there a trick to popping this thing back onto that pin?
