Radiator cap for ‘34…correct?

I’ve been talking with Jeremy for a while now troubleshooting my leaking problems…and we’re at the radiator cap. I believe it’s supposed to be a vented cap, but I don’t see how this one could vent. It looks original, so maybe someone can assist. Here are some pics of the current cap. Perhaps I need to dig out all the gunk along rim on the outside? Is that how it would vent? I believe the center “nub” is just a rivet.

  • I tightened the packing yesterday, this morning no drip while running after 10 min so figured it was good. I put this cup under pump, and let it sit for 3 hours. When I came back I found some antifreeze in the cup…not much, but also some under car. I’m really starting to think that he’s onto something with the cap, cause the system is pressurizing after getting hotter once off and has no where to go. Now this seems like a lot less since I pumped some out of the top of the radiator. Also included pic of where level is in radiator now. It was at the rim before even after all the leakage through overflow and pump.

34 and 35 have an open system, its not pressurised at all. You should have an overflow/vent pipe running from a bump on top of the top tank down to near the bottom radiator hose fitting. That's why it doesn't matter that the cap isn't vented.

My radiator cap is identical to yours. I have never had a problem with leaks or overheating but I had my rad re-cored so that's probably why.
The cap is made of brass and polishes up nicely.
  • Okay yeah it does have overflow. And I believe this radiator has also been redone. Perhaps it’s still overfull? There was a lot less spillage this time after I removed some. It was like magic…even tho it was leaking out overflow once shut down and sitting…but level was always at the rim 😂

Fill the radiator to just above the bottom of the reservoir at the top of the radiator.
If you fill right up, you get rusty water everywhere when things get hot.
  • Annnddd that’s exactly what happened. I pumped more out a few minutes ago, it’s now where I can see into the radiator top tank which STILL seems high. I’m bout to take it to upholstery shop to get some prices…so I figured a good test shortly. I’m bringing my cup tho just in case 😂
