Rear door jamb courtesy light switches larger?

I have a ‘54 Hornet 4 door sedan and replaced my old front door jamb courtesy light switches with some newly manufactured ones that look identical and are made for a Ford Mustang.

These worked so well and looked so original that I ordered 2 more for the rear door jamb switches. Unfortunately, when I removed my old rear door jamb switches, I found that the hole diameter is larger, and the old rear switches are larger than the old front ones are! The new ones are too small and thus cannot be used.

It’s easy to measure the diameter difference without removing the switch.

Were the rear door switches actually different?  It’s difficult to imagine why that would be, but if so, where  would I get replacements for the larger switches?

  • Could you share the application or part number for the Ford switches? I could use a set for my 54 coupe.

Use a metal hole cover plug.  Drill the plug cover to the desired diameter

The door pillars on you 54 Hudson may be from earlier B pillar inventory at the time of manufacture and thus take a larger door switch. !954 was the odd year for Hudson in many respects. The changing of door jamb switches was typical of some of the strange head scratching changes that Hudson switched over too. If you need the larger switches let me know. I have plenty.

  • Lance, very interesting that at the end of 1953 when my 1954 Hornet was made that they were already trying to use up old, left over parts. The merger hadn’t been decided yet, but I guess they knew they were in financial trouble. But that would explain the mystery. Thanks!
