1935 Hudson pops out of second violently

Hello.
I am resurrecting a car that sat many years. It has the straight 8, no electric hand, no overdrive.
I finally drove it fast enough to put it in second gear up and down the slight slope I live on. It goes into gear smoothly, makes no strange noises, but will pop out of gear violently. This is under slight load or lightly coasting.
I am hoping there is an adjustment for this. It kicks the shifter hard enough to injure my wrist.
Thanks
