Oil leak?

Okay fellow's, here we go, 1950 262 narrow block, installed correct distributor with 1352t gasket on base, hole in block looks beveled and the gasket has square corners and before i force it, do you insert gasket in block then distributor? Thought i would ask first before i messed it up and Thank You in advance!

Original gasket was cork and round with corresponding bevel, as I recall.
