'56 Super Wasp starter, RIP
Look what my starter did. (See additional text below the picture.)
So... we're looking for another 12V starter for a 202/Hydramatic. The tag is missing from the old one so I don't know what I should be looking for. (The manufacturer's PN isn't listed in the MPC.) Can anyone provide this information, or, better yet, sell me a starter? Many thanks! Dan

I'm a novice when it comes to starters, but...
I was always told that -- when you put a 6-volt starter into a 12-volt car -- the "busted nose cone" is the result.
Yet you seem to be implying that your ex-starter was a 12-volt starter. If it was, then (according to what I had heard) this catastrophe should never have happened.
Now I'm really confused!0 -
Hi Jon. If I could edit the original post, I'd add that the car is a 12V, but I think it had a 6V starter in it... leading to a "busted nose cone". The photos I've been able to find online that show what looks like the same starter are indeed 6V, and it did exactly what you described. We'll be certain the replacement is the correct one for this car. Thanks for your thoughts!0

The original starter from the 202 Hudson engine installed in a 56 Wasp is a 12-volt unit. NOT a 6-volt Unit. The parts manual for the 56 Hudson is available online at
http://hudsonterraplane.com/tech/tech_index.htm#55 Look for the parts manual. This part number will allow you to ID the correct starter for your application. The Hudson Club Technical Advisor for your car is:

I could not ascertain the correct AutoLite starter number from the '56 AMC parts manual. (AMC seems to list THEIR part numbers, not the AutoLite numbers).
But from the following online Hudson data sheet http://hudsonterraplane.com/tech/1909/1909-1957ElecEquipFuelSystemData.pdf I discovered that the Auto-Lite MBG-4102 starter fits the 1956 Wasp 6 Series 40 w/hydramatic transmission. Is that your model?
I did not see an MBG-4102 for sale on the internet, BUT I discovered a newly-manufactured interchange for the MBG-4102, made by the MAI company:
https://gomondial.com/Category/70-661-70N/New-MAI-Starter-Motor-12V-9T-CW-Rotation/ . I don't know the price or availability, but the company that sells them is based in New York State.
I also noticed that Ebay lists a remanufactured Auto-Lite MDF-6012, 12-volt starter on Ebay for $140:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/126040698729?hash=item1d589c6f69:g:kMcAAOSwiZ9kzW9J&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA8PMx%2BwvFK0w6wzZjQYfWnaOEsdVt3lpD0LAO14o9RbBfDQYJ82%2BKsZFPxgJFzviBm%2FOpSxHTDYUkEqNifASOo4iQ3RnbLkk%2BE4DI0xuyUU%2Bm0sWYb9VLMyWoUphV3fG3VxdIOfisBmp9Cau2n7XZqyZAABfmk6se2dAJUrQIGmrC5IKAidV2GUB97ewSRCjLTunn58yFdB%2BRuJtB3YMiDkUsBZ%2Fx60o9p9IlWJAZMKSKEz9DDWvK%2FWSvv065pjSEihbObV2H72HGAjAiZawK4RukOZdbiJk9UmQdU4zYvwuO2j6AZPOqR8cgpFA%2Fk3glyg%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBMksDa1Nhi
This starter fits the 1956 Hornet 6 Series 60 w/hydramatic transmission . My guess is that it will NOT fit your Wasp because it has a different engine (and may have different mounting points and clearances). But what do I know? Maybe it will interchange perfectly!

Yes, that's my car all right. (The list shows it as a 6V, but it's a 12V.) That Auto-Lite PN should be all we need for finding one (I hope). Thanks a million for the information!0
