Correct voltage regulator for a GDZ generator?

The car is a 1942 Commodore 8. I have given up on the 3 brush generator. I just couldn't adjust it to provide enough amps to power lights, heater fan and OD.

So, I got a 2 brush generator from another member (GDZ-6001B) and now I need a regulator for it. I have tried a Hudson branded VRP6101B (NOS) and there is no charge.

I tried a GR761 (Motorcraft) and it charges too well. It doesn't cut back, continuing at 8+ volts and 20 amps off idle.

I have scoured the appropriate period Hollanders and find the appropriate numbers for a GDZ generator are VRP4004-P1 that replaces VRP6101B. But also listed as an interchange are VRP numbers 4002A or 4201A or 4402A or 4404F or 6101A or 6001A with a final notation that VRP-4004F replaces ALL of them!

Looking at Rock Auto for 52-53 Hudson, it suggests a Standard Motor Products VR4.

An old post on this site suggests a VR25.

I have bought a bunch of (not cheap) NOS regulators trying to function with 2 different 3 brush generators and I am tired of experimenting.

I understand the the GDZ generator is the first 2 brush generator used by Hudson starting 51-53(?) with a change sometime in 53.

What voltage regulator are the 50-53 folks finding successful?

You would have been pushing water uphill with a fork to expect too much from the original generator. Anay matching generator and regulator with a 45 amp rating should do the job, Chrysler, Studebaker, Hudson, Packard. Note I say "matching" It's no use trying to fit a 45 amp regulator to a 25 amp Generator. And you must follow the instructions for adjustment as in the workshop manuals for that model. For 1954, the generators were all 45 amp,. so I suggest you look for one of those. And yes, a replacement VR25 should work. But do check the maximum amperage for the generator, and set the regulator for that.
