Smoky 37
Hi, I have been working on my 37 Terraplane for years. Some years ago, I had the cylinders bored to .020 oversize and installed .020 oversize rings and pistons, Now after putting the rest of the car together, balancing work/kids etc. , I have it where it is driveable. The problem is it smokes really badly. I am using 30W break in oil with ZDDP. I wonder, if I used 40 W oil would it help? OR is there another alternative?
Thanks for any help out there!
John

40 is too heavy for a rebored engine. Use zinc oil after 1000 miles. Use straight 20 weight for run-in. Expect a bit of smoke for the first few hundred miles. What pistons and rings did you use?

Thanks Geoff! Pistons and rings are .020 oversize.

I take it the cylinders were well honed.

I believe so. It's been awhile since I rebuilt the engine.

Does it smoke under load or just briefly when you move off after a period of idling ?
If it's just the latter, it could be worn valve guides - you haven't said if you put new valves and guides in.
David.
