You won't get an electric unit that will fit inside the gap, so it will involve butchering the metal strip to allow the wiper motor to protrude back into the cab.

With your Toyota motor you should have very good vacuum to run your wipers.

You may be able to overhaul the vacuum unit, but if it is original it is most likely beyond the pale. Generic ones are available. I believe an outfit called Fricken Wi-er Services have the facilities to work on these, don't know their address sorry. At the least, yoiu could dismantle and lubricate your wiper, but in my experience old units are dried out and the leather gone hard.

In the mean time use a glass treatment similar to Rain-X to repel water.

You have to remove the metal panel (4 screws), take the arm off the wiper, and remove the unit. If it is original it will have two extensions on each side of the motor that are screwed into the frame, and the centre shaft willhave a grommet around it. if it is not original it will have a threaded outer shaft. Getting a replacement with the correct length shaft will be the main thing.

I removed my vacuum wiper motor and substituted a small 6 Volt wiper motor.

I managed to do this without making/enlarging any holes or doing any other alterations to originality in the process - it was very simple to do (or I wouldn't have been able to do it !).

I've kept the old motor so the next owner can restore and reinstall it if they're that way inclined.

In the meantime, I have a windshield wiper that actually works !

thank you for all your help.... bottom line is probably best just to drive it when the weather permits, and apply Rain-X .

  • I spoke with Ficken wiper about my 29 Trico motor.

He says that the pot metal of the older motors suffer from decay and internal leaks. Even if they are unused NOS components. Doesn’t your motor have a manual lever to move the arms manually?

  • no manual arm for wiper,, however my '24 Model T does have a manual wiper,

    thank you,

  • I guess it was a 1929 thing….
