is there a Hudson Birth Certificate?
Quite a few classic and vintage British car sites have registries that have access to factory records, and can do the research and issue semi-official "Heritage certificates" verifying your car's VIN, body#, engine/trans numbers, etc.... and include your car's date of manufacture and even original colors and options.
Is there anything comparable for stepdown Hudsons?
I'm not talking about sites that just ask for and track info that you voluntarily submit on your car. That type info is not reliable.
I'm talking about factory records, right?
As I'm writing this, I'm thinking that there is such a registry, and I'm the only dummy who isn't aware of it....

Nothing like that.

I heard that most of the records were lost or destroyed during the merger with Nash.

Not a chance. But in our minds they all have a pedigree. LOL

I saw somewhere either in the HET library or somewhere that you can narrow down by VIN approximately when the car was made. It went pretty far back, ‘30s or even the ‘20s.

What a shame that factory records did not thrive.
It's great to find your VIN, original engine and trans numbers, as well as ext/int colors, and some original options on factory records.
I've gotten these on sev 1950s and 60s Jags, and MGA.
