how should the wire going to the coil be terminated?

reinstalling wiring in to 1951 Hudson hornet, noticed that org wire from distributor to coil was not terminated, the end of wire is simply cut off flush with the insulation. the top of coil has a threaded insert, but wire was loose in coil, as this threaded insert doesn't touch the wire or retain...so wire would simply fall out. is a boot needed to hold wire in this coil , or is there a terminal missing from end of wire?

see attached for coil connection and insert.

thank you

  • Are you talking about the high tension wire that goes into the top of the coil to the center outlet in your distributor cap ?

My 39 has a coil like that I had to strip the wire cover off and insert the bare wire into the threaded piece at the opening and up to the threaded end. Folded the bare wire over onto the brass threaded end and screwed that back into the coil.

  • that's actually what I did for the time being as well. sure it will hold up and work but didn't know if this was how it was originally... I since googled some images of other older threaded coil tops and see use a pinched or crimped brass split washer on the end of the wire (looks like alot were used on coils HT wires in the UK).

  • Unusual but undoubtedly a superior method to fasten the coil wire especially if driving over rough bumpy roads (like England's in the 50's and California's today).
