Looking for feedback your experience re SNAP Starters gear deduction 12v for manual trans

These 12v starters engage the ring gear from the front.....6v starters engage the ring gear from the back

Wondering about any negative experiences

  • They chew up the manual ring gears from what I saw on Danny Barnett's 54 Hornet. There might be a ring gear with the bevel on the correct side of the teeth for a forward facing beveled ring gear that will work. You need to contact Al Suehring at

  • Thank you Ken....I'm surprised....Snap Starters say they engage gently and don't start spinning until they are fully engaged. The pinion on the starter is beveled so you would think if it's engagement is gentle that it wouldn't do any damage to the manual ring gear (which is straight cut without a bevel facing the front of the car). I'll give Al a call thank you

My other alternative would be to change a starter to 12v fields...don't know if this is a happy fix. If anyone has experience with this please chime in and share your experience.

I've been using a 6v starter for years....and want to change to a 12v starter of some sort

  • Problem is, without the bevel properly cut in the front of the ring gear for the SNAP starter, the bevel on the SNAP pinion gear itself is not always sufficient for the pinion to slide into mesh......it will extend until it hits the ring gear, but not go all the way on. Sometimes it will go on, other times , Not. SNAP will tell you it works all the time......but then they want your $$.

Yes, the 12V field coil conversion works well! I have that on my 53 Hornet. Did the same on Jeremy Larsen's 49 Super Six with manual shift. Sent both to Ken Warner at Classic Generator in Midlothian, TX. The Bendix on your stick shift starter is same as the ones used on Ford 8N & 9N tractors, rear engagement, counter clockwise rotation viewed from gear end of Bendix starter drive. You can get this starter drive with the modern sprag clutch design , that eliminates that "overrun whirring" if the engine catches, but doesn't start.

  • Great info above --thanks

On my 46 brougham with a twin H 262 and 3 speed overdrive I used the stock 46 starter. The car has been on 12 volt since I put the car together in 1980 and I've never had a starter problem. This just my experience for info. My question is could the stock ring gear be reversed if you wanted to run one of the gear drive starters? But if you had to reverse the ring gear it wouldn't be just a bolt in the starter job.

Bevel on original Hudson manual ring gear would be on the wrong side of the tooth for a front engaging clockwise rotation modern starter (viewed from drive end).
