Tried that, no dice. But I would think that it is wired just as the car. Positive (RED) wire to ground.

Here's a video that may be helpful. It's based on a model A Ford but provides the setup for using a 6-volt, positive ground system to charge a phone. I was able to follow and connect a socket charger to use in charging my iphone in my Hornet. As demonstrated in the video, about 5 and a half volts is enough for phone charging. Obviously this something to be very careful with so as not to fry a thousand dollar phone.
