Hydramatic shifter lever wear

Has anyone drilled and pinned their automatic shifter lever in their stepdown? My '54 shifter has so much slop that it is a pain to get in gear. Tightening the screw works for about one or two shifts.

How worn are the threads. I would think the easiest route would be to drill the bottom threads out and install a helicoil.
