Alternator brackets

Queries about alternator brackets are posted from time to time. The brackets are not hard to make and all look pretty much the same for the 212, the 254, or step-down motors.

The starting point is a 5" piece of 1" x 5/16" bar which is drilled to suit the mounting holes on the block. After that you need 2 'ears', I've used the same 1" x 5/16" bar. The front ear is postioned so the engine pulley and alternator (B section) pulley line up, the rear ear is positioned to suit the alternator you plan on using.

You should be able to reuse the original adjustment arm, it may need to be packed off the block with a washer or two or it may need to be subtly reshaped.

    Nicely done!

  • I installed an alternator on my Hudson 8 pickup after converting it to 12 volts and All I did was flip over the original generator bracket. I used a GM single wire alternator.
