Water pump packing

What is the purpose of the 2 grooves in this collar from a 1933 Essex Terraplane 6 cyl water pump?

Also, I have the graphite impregnated packing, should I install that dry?

    Why wouldn't you get the modern sealed bearing conversion offered by Jeremy Burris?

    You can install it dry, but I normally use a smear of moly grease as well.

    Before the two responses were posted I put the packing in dry. I am still curious about the purpose of the grooves in the collar.


    I may use Jeffery’s service after the season. It seems to run fine with the original configuration. It is pretty straightforward to repack and if it lasts awhile not a big chore to repack it periodically. I am a fan of period correct.
