Suggestion for "newer" users....
Keep in mind, most of the questions some of you may have, probably have already been asked and addressed on this message board. The board has a terrific search feature, and perhaps that might be a better option.
I love the notion of restoring my hudson, and other restoring theirs, and sharing the knowledge that I have found, as well as the information that others have found, but come on, be fair, myself, and I bet, most of the others don't want to be involved to a point where we know each and every bolt being turned, daily.
Let some of the suspense build up. Have a question on where to find something, or how to do something, try the search feature first. If that's not successful, then ask the group, where everyone on here will be more than glad to help however we can (myself included).
Don't abuse the helpful nature of the board, because quite frankly, it will wear out sooner than later, and you will find yourself with one less free resource.
Most of the people on the board find it great that another hudson is being rescued, but don't necessarily want to have to participate daily on it's restoration.
Take care all!

Hi Hudsonkid!
I'll have to mostly disagree with you on this one - that doesn't mean I want to start an online argument! Just going to voice my opinion
Yes, NOOBS sometimes ask questions that a simple search would answer - I'm guilty of that sometimes myself, I've also been guilty of getting short with NOOBS when asking simple queations although I try not to do it much anymore as it tends to discourage participation IMHO
But, I am the type of person that does like to hear about the progress of peoples builds and restorations since it keeps me interested and more motivated on getting mine done.
I guess I feel posts on the forum are like TV shows, don't like the content... don't watch the channel...
And please, no one get offended, but I "ignore" several posts on subjects I don't care, have time, or have expertise about...but then again, sometimes I enjoy going through and reading everyone of them as well - even if I'm rodding my car and the thread owner is restoring theirs...
Anyway - that's just my $.02 and I do enjoy your posts on the forum so keep 'em coming even if the NOOBS get you down!0 -
I can agree with you on several points, however, as much as I like hearing about how much progress is happening on everyone's hudsons, it gets old when valuable topics are pushed off the main pages when a simple search will provide the user of the message board with the needed information.
Not like TV, where all of the good channels get moved off the main tuner, and all of the repeats get main billing, and all the NOOBS have to do is rent the video that everyone and their brother already watched...
My post is merely a polite "reality check" for a few out there that might find the search function a useful tool. Heck, I imagine they might not even know about it....
That's all.0 -

I think I have asked all the questions I can think of so I will not be asking anymore questions untill I search the internet for an answer. Hudsonkid ????? I think you do a great service to this board and I say that from my heart. You are on here more then anyone as far as I can tell.. If you are the goorooo of this Hudson board then when someone askes a question then I "pick you" to research it and post all the information you find for all of us to see. Thanks, Ron0 -

Ron, there is a real easy way to tell who traffics the board most often. Check out their post total, and go from there. What really tells though, is if you take the date someone registered, and figure out how many months they were active, and divide to find out total post per day or month. Mostly works out to 1 or 2 posts a day, some more, for the fairly active few, this is the norm.
Now when you got someone that's around 4 or 5, maybe it's time to think about the validity or necessary nature of some of those topics...
I tihnk when you come on here, and have people that could just as well do a quick search, find information on what they are looking for, instead of asking the same stuff over and over, it just shows a level of laziness, in my opinion. It makes everyone else a "go for" person, while it just shows what's going on with the world.
It makes me wonder what would happen if there was no internet, and how would the select few ever figure out how to find parts sources, or even figure out how to restore a hudson.
Ron, if you further read my posts, I think the tone and nature is fairly polite, and courteous, so I really don't see the problem with what I posted. I think if nothing it offers an avenue to newer subscribers that they might not necessarily know exists.
I personally feel that some of the new threads that get started push really interesting topics off the board too quick, too often, and that's ashame.
How would you feel that if everyday someone would come on here, and ask questions like...
"When was the hudson made"
"What's a terraplane'
"What's a hudson hornet"
"What does stepdown mean"
"What is twin H"
"Where do I get a fuel pump, gakset, this part or that" (which almost always produces an answer in a search, try it!)
Just plan laziness, I feel. People don't value the work that goes into an answer, and would rather exploit a free service as much as possible, without expending any of their own time or effort into the search. Why spend your own time, when someone will just serve up the information for you...0 -

I'd feel great. That would mean in one year there would be 365 more people interested in Hudsons then there were last year.
If you don't want to answer the questions, don't.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but threads are only maintained on the forum for a finite amount of time anyway - if its an important thread with information you want to keep without re-asking the question you can save the thread text locally to your computer and have it all to yourself forever and ever...0 -

I personally have never seen a post on this forum that I thought was a waste of bandwidth. The titles are ususally clear, so I simply skip what doesn't interest me. I really like to read about other peoples progress and discoveries. If there were 100+ new threads a day, my feelings would change on this.
I have to strongly disagree about the last statement specifically. I think it is much more likely that new users are not aware of the search capabilities of this forum. I myself have been guilty of this here and on other forums. It is not that I'm lazy, I'm just not the most web savy guy. This forum may be more this way than others due to the age demographic of this particular group (which can be searched in a previous Poll). No offense intended.
Seriously though, I would hate to see any lesser amount of traffic on this site. I would rather see more users covering the same topics just for the sake of discussion and interaction. Some very interesting threads and tidbits come from topics that have been covered before.
Point taken about the seach tool. I have used it and it is a great resource.
My $.0299

Hudsonkid, you're not paying to keep this forum operating. Why should you care who posts what? Skip what you don't want to look at if all the "newbie" questions are such a waste of your time. The rest of us will enjoy the forum as is, thanks.0

Gee
What if there were no INTERNET? I guess, that question provided me the opportunity to expose my age. When I started Hudson driving, the extent of my connection with all of you would have been a chance encounter or possibly a call on our party line phone. What I know about Hudsons is the result answers to my questions to others. In the beginning those questions were pretty basic. But luckily I was surrounded by folks who were willing to help me keep my car running. NOTE my car not Hudson. Most folks were able to impart to me the knowledge I needed in a manner that did not make me feel stupid or dumb for asking the question. One day in 1968 I got to talk with a fellow named Bernie Siegfried. A real knowledgeable man who helped me decide what route to take in overhauling a Hornet engine. At no time during that conversation did he tell me he had designed the basic Stepdown engine nor did he let me know he had worked for Hudson. He was another man albeit many years my senior who was willing to take the time to listen to me and help me understand what needed to be done an more importantly why. Since that time I copiers became available so I could share information with others, fax machines became available to the individual and while I was still in the military the first LUNCH BOX computers and the DARPA NET appeared. What is DARPA NET? well that was a secret then... today anyone young or old, kind or cruel has access to computers and the INTERNET. An explosion in the exchange of information has resulted and the opportunity to ask and answer questions near real time is now the norm.
At the core of all of this is the HUMAN who is striving to gain enough confidence to make a decision, much of that decision is based on data. In the arena of old cars, Hudson being this boards focus, folks who are not familiar with a Hudson have the wonderful gift of this BBS where they can post the burning questions they have and be assured that most will be answered.
Like Matt, I find it hard to believe there are any questions a visitor might ask which do not belong here. Obviously this does not include vulgarities or subjects not supporting the core theme of Hudsons. All of us are the beneficiaries of those willing to take the time to post an answer. Some like I have been amazed at the wealth of knowledge that has been shared here. I learn something new every day. Yes I do think what is a Twin H? a valid question. I also think we will all benefit from those who take the time to share with others techniques to capture, sort and search the wealth of data here in.
So, take a breath and hit reset and while you are at it ... drop Ted an email thanking him for the chance to come here and share with others each day.
Thanks Ted!0 -
I think Hudsonkid makes valid points. I don't think he is suggesting that people don't post, more like not posting just for the sake of posting. Suggesting that NOOBS use the search feature was a given for me. I searched like crazy before I joined the forum and, in doing so, had many questions answered. If there is so much going on with a particular member, perhaps he or she could give an update once or twice a week. The search feature of this forum is quite comprehensive. Therefore, piling a weeks worth of questions into one thread will not impede archival searches. This is supposed to be a hobby and a hobby is supposed to be fun. So, let's have fun and not bicker. Now to get ready for 12+ inches of snow this evening.:eek:0

While I don't always agree with Ken, or his opinions, I will always say his website of resources is a terrific tool on the web for anyone that has a hudson. One of the first hudson resources I found, and actually got my hudson back out and running.
I actually would like to meet Ken one of these days, perhaps I'll run into him at a National somewhere, I think he would be an interesting fellow to meet. I like his stories of what I consider "long ago"
With that said, I think Ken has provided one very valuable point here, that I think deserves recognition, and have to agree with it.
One thing I don't understand is how does everyone think that asking some newer folks to look at using the search function is a bad request. Just seems to me that we have been hit with a flood of questions that have been on here so many times before. This is a common item on every message board I participate on, maybe everyone here just doesn't see it the same way.
Maybe what we ultimately need is a FAQ page.
Just another suggestion.0 -
in time the people that asked a lot of questions wise up and work things out for themselves. its like anything in life, do it a few times and you get the hang of it and you're good to go. i know i need a lot of pointing in the right directions from time to time, but then once you get a sniff you know what to look out for -a phone number- a name or an address that pops up in the papers often- even see a guy on a street with a hudson and everything comes a bit easier. in this game its a case of who you know, and when you are stuck out in no (hudson)mans land it takes a bit of finding the who's. even then they cant provide all the answers so this is the next step, but yes it is all too easy to just go "i need X and X does this work with X and how do i install X?" then other times no amount of staring fiddling adjusting etc will shed light on a situation and you end up here. my 50 cents worth0

Man its 2:45 am and I guess I just have to chime in here! LOL
Personally the search has not always come up with what I am looking for or sometimes isn't working.
People who use this forum are probably very varied in their expreience or knowledge with computers, the internet, or even search functions. I would hate to hear of folks who don't post a question or topic because they don't know if its been covered before and they don't want to hear snide or belittling comments if they do nor feel stupid. That would be a shame.
I agree with the thoughts stated here that if you don't like or need a topic....don't read it. Many topics on the Hud forum I pass right up because they pertain to me or my build. If I see a topic on gaskets for a 232, I don't bother to read it because I don't own one anymore nor have interest in owning one. But if someone has a progress post (even on a resto job) I usually will read it because I like to hear others progress and maybe see some pics (even if its not my personal style).
I just hate to lose some here, because we may get a little impatient with some folks questions. As an old friend of mine use to say "don't sweat the small sh*t!"
Life's too short.0 -
I have been coming on the forums, almost since it started, and even attended ( I believe it was the first ) Chatters Breakfast in Nashville in 1999 at the nationals. A lot of what I know and can share with others about Hudsons was gained here on this forum. I do have other resources for info on Hudsons, I know "Hudsonator and Hudzilla", and several others that are not online and they definately are "go to" people. Denham Morgan in Kingsport TN has forgotten more than I will ever know about Hudsons!
Most people that come here and ask questions, are merely tapping into the largest repository of HUDSON information available ANYWHERE.
If a question seems to have been answered before, thats OK. Many times the answer to a question may have changed, since it was originally asked. ( part numbers are constantly changing, and new part sources are found ) So bring on the questions, If I have a suggestion or answer, then I will give it, if not I will leave it for those more knowledgable than I.
Remember that the reason this is the most used forum on Classiccar.com is that it is considered by Hudson people as the Quickest and easiest way to get answers to their questions and to pass on knowledge. Let's face it, for my age and health, the Quicker and Easier, the better.
Now I will get down off the soapbox.

The only thing that seem a bit odd, especially for Hudsonites, are comments like:
I only look at what interests me or is related to what I'm doing. The point should be to jump in and help one another in anyway we can.0 -
You also have to keep in mind its exciting for someone to find a place where other Hudson owners are talking and for new users its very daunting to throw your hat into the ring and post a question. The older the user the harder it is to join in so the fact someone jumps in is great.
I run 4 different forums and it is always the same a new user comes on gets the courage to ask a question gets a good answer and away they go. Invariably down the line that new user is one of the ones answering another new users questions after they have more experience. And after being the moderator on these boards I find that using the search function is not intuitive and when you do get a bunch of answers the user is not as confident that they got the correct info or are not experienced enough to tell so asking the question for their own situation is better.
And the really odd thing is on all my other boards someone posts a subject like this and the answers are just about the same everytime. About 98% of the posters are in favor of just letting people fire away as they do not want to scare off new posters. On my forums I have a section for new users which explains the search function and lays down posting rules. Of course you always get the people who do not read these rules.
I think we need a little faq that is sticky to the top of the forum that gives a few hints. I for one don't mind answering the same questions because my answers are always " call Dale Cooper, talk to Randy Maas, have you tried KGap, yes Bill Albright has those".......0 -
I certainly agree that the search function is a good place to start, but it occurred to me that the more basic the question, the more difficult to answer it with a search. Case in point- I searched "twin h", and got 457 threads- quite a daunting task to go through that many, and most, if not all, are considerably more technical than a simple definition- you need to know what it is before the thread even makes any sense. Granted, you could figure it out pretty quickly, I imagine, but how much easier just to ask, and get a well stated definition by one of the patient denizens of the board. And it gets even harder with an even more basic question- What is meant by "stepdown"? Try searching that out, and you'll see what I mean. By contrast, I have some knowledge of the overdrive system, but much to learn; I searched "overdrive solenoid" and came up with a manageable 18 hits. So, I guess I have to side with the "bring it on" philosophy- part of the "mission" of many of us is to "save a Hudson", so if we can do so by being patient with the newbies and thereby gaining a convert, lets do it. I do agree, though, that suppliers can usually be found quickly by a search, and I think any answer to an obvious newbie question should include the spiel about joining HET, as many questions will be answered in the first issue of the White Triangle. As usual, Hudsonkid, certainly no offense to you meant by any of this, and we do appreciate your insight (and your excellent information).0

I don't think you quite grasped the meaning of what I said. If someone posts a question on rebuilding a Hudson engine, I know nothing about this and have nothing to offer. Certainly, many knowledgeable guys always are there to answer or help someone in these areas. If I can assist someone I most certainly will, but that doesn't mean I have time to read every post on this forum. Besides, you seem to have conveniently missed my point of saying I like to read progress and pics posted threads even on resto jobs, I'm interested. Or if someone lists a part they need, I'm interested.
I see no need to post on every thread "sorry I can't help you, but someone here can" if its an area I no nothing of. And as a recent Hudson owner, and a modifier, I have little in the way of knowledge to share on a restoration.
I see no problems with my comment at all. And besides, my son loves to consume some of my computer time watching old music videos on youtube.com and singing along, learning the words! LOL That has more applicability to my life then "what is the correct thermostat housing for a 262."0 -
Hope you knowledgable Hudson guys keep responding to even the most basic questions. You have to remember that some of us ended up interested in or having obtained a Hudson, and we were not Hudson guys to start with or ever knew anyone who had a Hudson. I really appreciated the responses to what now seems rather basic inquiries - like how to drain and flush a wet clutch ( I didn't even know that my Hudson had a wet clutch till I found out by reading the threads on this forum! ). It is very hard to even find a person how has worked on a Hudson or has any knowledge of the unique things involved with this marque. The search function was not functional for a good period of time - thanks to whomever got that function back on-line!!!
Understand some frustration with the questions like "what is a stepdown" with sites available like Ken Cates'. Some research should be expected. Hope you Hudson "experts" continue to contribute with your knowledge - I have not found another resource to compair to this site.

Again,I just want to thank anyone willing to help us new guys out.I had a "50 Pacemaker when I lived back in Illinios about 10 yrs ago. I didn't get any where with it because I didn't know where to start or who to talk to. I ended up selling it to someone else. Keep in mind that if you don't want to respond, that is OK. I think we all have similar interests in the Hudson Automobile and with so many cars being lost to crushers and left to rust because the word doesn't get out I like the idea of this forum. What we are doing is saving a piece of history for others to see and appreciate .Thanks ...Tom0

You need to ease up a bit there. I was not singling you out nor was MY comment directed at you, nor was it intended to launch anyone into defensive tangents. Just an observation, one which didn't require a rude reply.0 -
Hudsonkid, I agree with you that as with anything else folks should do their homework. Sometimes though you need someone to point out where the card catalog is. (I know most libraries don't have those anymore) So perhaps a little FAQ on how to use the search wouldn't be a bad idea. I don't mind helping out any newbie, remembering what it was like myself being the only kid on my block crazy enough to get a Hudson.
I don't mind so much the heavy flow of threads and posts. If you relied on mail your world of Hudsoning would happen in 2 month cycles or monthly in the case of some newsletters. Sam J can't possible cram that much information in a WTN every 2 months. I can't wait a month for the latest in Hudsoing I'll go through withdrawl. LOL I check threads close to every day along with my horoscope. LOL0 -

15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct

Let's answer these to the best of my ability....
First, I have not been nominated to do a newbie FAQ. It probably was posted by some upset poster trying to show internet muscle or something, trying to make a point. In all actuality, I think the FAQ would be a nice addition, and perhaps I will consider making my own, and posting a link....
As far as the Louis Backhus manual, I think at this point, it might be better to start over. It gets difficult to look at trying to find equivalent parts for parts that are also now obsolete. I think one of the best sources now is Ken Cates' swap page. Some of the numbers are no longer good, but for the most part if you do the homework, they work well.
Maybe the forum needs a few other sub forums. I worry whenever there are requests made to the admins, seems things don't work right for some time... As far as sub forum, the street rod forum, while a good idea, doesn't seem to have the traffic that those who requested it intended. I think that even so, those that really need an answer, might just as well be better off posting to the regular hudson forum.
I don't know what the answer is, but I think that we can all agree to the fact that perhaps we need to do something, at least in terms of a mini FAQ or something. The thread here was not started to PO anyone, or alienate anyone, rather just to toss out there an observation/trend I have noticed for some time.
For those that get sensitive about this discussion, I don't know what to tell you, perhaps read the Chevy forum or something...0
