Removing Starter
I used the search function and see many tips for installation and caveats so nothing breaks and it is aligned properly.
Is is better to remove it from above by diving head first into the engine compartment or from under the car?
I need to get it cleaned (way to much road gunk on it). I am looking to do this next weekend with my daughter (she likes the old car).

I have removed from the top. Its not that bad. Make sure you use a good fender guard when you are hanging over that fender to get the bolts out.0

Especially if you're working in the nude. :eek:0 -
I have done this quite a few times from the top with no problem (usually clothed):o . Once the starter is out, I would recommend removing the Bendix assembly. Thoroughly clean and lube it to ensure that you don't have issues with it sticking in the near future.

Thanks, all. I had not thought about the clothing issue before. Would make life interesting when the lkids are out of the house.
I am having the starter professionally cleaned and serviced once I get it out.0 -
Pacemaker500,
Have you posted pictures of your car anywhere? I would love to see some pictures that show more of the car.
By the time you're done with this thing, you'll be an expert. You have covered more in your first few months than many people do in years.
Keep up the good work!

I am working the picture issue. I have to get access to a PC that has Photoshop to reduce the size of the images that are made by my digital camera.
As far as work goes, not a lot of actual work has been done. Just a lot of prep work really. I have done the simple things like replace the plugs and wires, cap and rotor. They were working fine but needed to be replaced as they were 46 years old (last time they were changed). The fuel pump has been rebuilt but after finding out about the bad flex hose, I do not think it needed to be done (but that was started by someone else before I got the car). I now have a working fuel line so I can test other things. The carb should return next Friday. I have also cleaned wire terminals and changed light bulbs. And I have ordered a lot of parts to replace those that are clearly worn.
Once the carb gets back on, I'll test it then take the starter and generator off (hopefully next Saturday) as long as things go well and have them professionally cleaned and serviced. Next up will be the newly coated wheels and rubber (Kelsey by Goodyear owns the OEM tread pattern). Then it will be thigns that I will have a shop do (new brake lines stem to stearn, new fuel line to OEM spec [3/8 copper in it now], shocks, brake pads and full spring set).
After that, it mostly cosmetic stuff. All the seal rubber needs to be replaced and the trunk rim needs some metal work. A good polishing, some spot paint and will be a full 3+ car. Once I get the bank build back up, it will have a full body and frame job done.0 -

Assuming you are running Microsoft's XP as an operating system, to reduce the size of your photos: find them in your "My Documents" folder & hilight the required photo. Choose the "email this file' option & then the "make this file smaller" option. Email it to your self, & bingo, a smaller copy of your photo!!:)
