THis looks interesting.. Does anyone think that if there is rust in the rockers there is probably rust in the frame ?

  • me and hudsondad looked at this car back in 2005, when it was still in PA. It has some frame rust, and I would question the "engine rebuild" it was more of a take apart, and clean up. Ask the seller if this car came from Lancaster County, PA?

It drove nice at the time, shifted well, brakes were great, OD worked, rockers were all gone, rear quarter rust, and like I said some frame rot, but not terrible. It basically needed all of the 2 door side trim, and all chrom redone.

asking price when I looked at it was $7200 (and firm)

    Hudson Kid,

Where was the frame rot? in the back by the quater's ? In your estimation, how much would be required to fix it right ? Do you think it would be big $ $ ?

    Thanks
  • This car does look familiar. If it's the same car from Lancaster County, It ran Okay and the interior was decent. The body was good except for a few dents and the rust over the rear wheel wells and rockers. My recollection was there was some rust on the perimeter and I think there was a small amount in at least one of the frame corners or junctures. The car was pretty straight on the long panels and some trim needed replaced. I thought it was a decent deal at $7K (definitely not a steal and close enough to OCPG at the time) for a coupe, and Hudsonkid should have bought it. It wil be interesting to see what the reserve is. If you can do all the work yourself, It would not be a big expense. Maybe 30-40 hrs for replacing body and frame metal.

If only I had the financial freedom that hudsondad has, I would of bought it.

and since I can't click on the smileys, I want to insert either a roll eyes, or a sad smiley.

That's the problem with life for most is that when people are young and can enjoy the toys, the money to buy them is usually not there. When they're old, the money may be there but they are too old to enjoy what it can buy. Maybe Hudsondad should buy you that car so he can live vicariously through you. :D

What a cool car. That is what I originally set out for before I came across my Special. He doesn't mention much about rust though. Hhhmmmm

no, I thought the pans were solid, maybe a small spot on the bend, which is typical stepdown rust....

I am sure it is the same car though....

he mentions the new pistons, rings, main, and rod bearings, all I got to say, is unles that was done real recently (Ask to see a receipt) it's not the whole truth. The engine rebuild was more of a "hone" and clean, as per the previous owners.

Looking at the same shape of the engine from when we visited the car, ie.. the paint peeling, the head was not off since.

But the car ran strong. I liked it. I bet it has a 9000 reserve, or abouts...
  • I don't think the engine was touched, except they got the Twin H air cleaners back on. The engine work was done without removing the engine we were told. It looks like it has an additional 100+ miles on it since we looked at it about 2 years ago. The color is still ugly. If I was looking for a '54 coupe, I would have bought it. There's not alot around to choose from and this one wasn't THAT BAD for the $$ at the time. Nice pictures, "Kid". They look like they were taken with a NIKON!
  • I spoke with the owner this morning. The coupe is from Penn. I suspect it is the same car whose pictures are posted here. I would suggest to anyone who is interested in this car complete a through inspection I was told by the seller the engine runs strong and the car is driveable. All who call for an inspection appointment should be able to confim these claims. I specifially asked about frame rot and any other rust problems.

I suspect the seller is not familar with unseen Hudson rust problems. The only new piece of information I can provide is the front seat back was repaired with similar material and the interior color is green on green and original.

If you are close and want to inspect, the owner said he welcomes all who will make an appointment. I would take along a sharp awl and probe the frame members so your inspection properly IDs the frame condition.

I am posting a link to a pdf document I created which records the cronicles of Randy Owens repair of a 1954 Hudson Hornet Hollywood. Several years ago Randy asked me to help identify a means of repairing his rusted and wrecked 54 Hollywood. The PDF document shows the begining, process and results. BTW the car has taken AACA prizes for the outstanding job done to repair and resurrect this Hornet. My friend and fellow Hudson Nut, Jim Guinn provided the donor car and even delivered it to Randy. The point... even the terminal examples can be brought back with planning, patience and a proper amount of cash.

These cars can be repaired and coupes are definately worth the effort and monies to do so.

Good Luck to the person who tackles this coupe!

I think that Hudsondad needs to be visited by the three Christmas spirits...;) ;)
  • WOW!!!! Met reserve at $13,500!!!! Sounds like the present owner made a Good Buy. I would've called this one a weak #3. BUT, how many are available and it's a running coupe with the right options. (although, I'd sooner have a hydramatic, personally)

I guess the fact that it's a Coupe makes it so desireable....
  • interesting, this is the same car that i wanted to buy at hershey this year,i looked her over and the floors were repaired already, she ran real nice,i had too many cars at the time with me ,or i would have bought it for a fim price of 7600.00 buy the time i got back to it with the room it had been sold. now the guy did do some work on this car,the seats were fixed, and some repair on the skirt area oh well, if you find a hundred dollar bill on the ground is it worth less because you found it? NO! this car is worth what ever the market will bear,,its not a bad hudson
  • as someone stated earlier, these are hard to find in driver condition. At 13.5K, How much would a nice paint job, chrome and mechanicals add to the cost of the final product? For those of us who don't do this kind of work, your looking at another investment of big money.

This price makes me feel good about the 51 Hornet Coupe I bought this summer!
