Royal Red???
Is there anyone out there that has a car that is Royal Red (a color in 1954-maybe other years---I think later replaced by Lipstick Red). I have the paint chips for 1954, but I think folks know how different a color can look in chip versus on a large surface. This is why we bought and tried about 6 test quarts of house paint to test before committing to a color for our house.
I would really like to see a picture of a Hudson in Royal Red, if some one would post one here, or send me a private message and I would send my email address, and then perehaps they could email a digital photo.
Thanks
JP

Lipstick and Royal are not close. Lipstick is not shown on most paint chip sheets (took me about 15 years to find one). Royal is a maroon - i would equate it to Toro red.0

Here's the on-line paint chip sheet for '54. As Nick noted, "Royal" is shown, "Lipstick" is not mentioned. http://tcpglobal.com/autocolorlibrary/cgi-bin/search/searchpic.pl?1954-hudson-pg01.jpg0

Thanks Nick--
I did know that royal red is much different, I kind of prefer a darker red--but want to see how maroon royal red is.
Again Thanks I appreciate the input

My '54 Hornet Hollywood is Ebony over Royal Red:
The paint was mixed to the original factory specs at a local NAPA dealer in 1990.

Bill,
that is one sweet looking 54. Love that paint job. I am jealous.....0 -
Yep, it's closer to Toro Red. The cars above are the Royal Reds.
Here is a pic of a Lipstick Red. Quite a difference0 -
Hey Thanks Bill
You won't know this but you helped me out with some 1954 Hudson information a year ago or so (not the car I have). Your car looks great--I think I'm sold on Royal Red. But your first photo looks brighter red--with a tinge of orange. and the others look a bit bronze/red. If you look at them on the web post which looks closer to you? (I understand that monitors monitors can use different color palettes that can make colors look different from "reality.") In different ligfhting color look different as well.
Funny thing is, neither looks exactly like the chip color I have for Royal Red. If you still have the mix specs floating around somewhere--I'd love to have them. Chaz's car looks to be "blinding red" but then--- he is an artist.
Again, Thanks Bill.

The tint of the color of the first pic probably looks brighter because the picture was taken in bright sunlight, and I played with the color adjustments when I scanned the pic several months ago. The other pictures were taken in the late afternoon, somewhat in the shade.
Royal Red is definitely lighter than the earlier Toro Red, but definitely darker than Lipstick Red. When the paint was mixed, the way it looked in the can was a lot different than it actually looked on the car once it was applied.
The NAPA store where it was mixed is the one who had the mixing charts with the original specs (the store specialized in mixing original colors). It has since changed hands, and the specs are no longer to be had.

But, to answer your specific question (which I forgot to do in the previous post), the second & third set of pictures is more representative of the true tint of Royal Red.
When it was in the can, the color looked just like the paint chip. But, came out much lighter when it was applied to the car.

Yup,
I gotta say, that is simply gorgeous.0 -
Bought a 54 a few years ago, freshly repainted with Coronation Cream over Kenworth Red as a substitute for Lipstick Red. Apparently Kenworth Red was the closest match the seller could find at the time.
I've no idea how close the match was, but it was very red, very bright and and very loud. I was happy!0 -
Go to your local PPG dealer. They can get you the correct color in either Lac. or Enam.
They will have to call the factory tech line to get the specs but they have just about every color you could want. This is how AutoColor gets their colors.
If that doesn't work go to
http://www.tcpglobal.com/autocolorlibrary/
they will make up the color for you. I belive they will package a bit in a spray bomb for you
Good luck0 -

This is a photo of a friend's car painted to match Royal Red. You cannot trust the color on the monitor but I compared his car color to the original paint chip and it is about as close as you can get. This is not a special mix. His painter found a match in a factory color which I can get if you like.0
