  • How about 50's era Nash (Ramblers too) and Studebaker cars, especially the Studes with wrap around rear window and big blow hole grill.
  • I think there has been one running on the General Forum for quite some time. Might be redunant.

But, I still like the polls though!

Yep same poll is on the general forums. But making an argument for the ugliest of the Hudsons out to stir up some controversey on this board. LOL It's all subjective.

    they're just jealous...

they don't have time to spend posting on a message board all day, since they need to be constantly working on their Fords, and Chevies, and Mopars... hehehe....

I got to agree with you, it is subjective, figure Dave posted about them 50's nashes, I like the bathtub nashes, and a matter of fact, the bullet nose studes are fine as well, they both look great street rodded....
  • chrysler airflow is one of the homliest ever ! i am partial to the bullet nose stude's, that was my first, second and third car in the late 50's. good thing they were gutless cause you had a he.. of a time getting them to stop. . .
  • When the Edsel came out it was referred to in publications as an "Oldsmobile sucking a lemon". I actually like the haunted house look of the '58 better than the sleeker front end of the '59. Pontiac Aztek.... Remember the LeMans of the 80s, the little three door job?? The Aztek looks like a bloated version!! Same sawed off rear end and all. I hate the angular styling of the late GMs. That gets my vote. There's no such thing as an ugly Hudson, although I don't favor the Kenosha jobs. The Gremlin is an ugly little *****, but I saw one with a Chrysler 340 in it one time that I thought was pretty cool. I think the new Scion vans are pretty bad.... I want to get a silver one, with the personalized tag, "Toaster". I do not care for the 59 Impala! But, my all time favorite for bogus automotive styling goes to the Cherolet Lumina APV/Pontiac Trans Sport/Oldsmobile Silouhette minivans, also known as "Doorstops" or "Dust Busters". These are the bane of my existence, right up there with cat tracks on paint jobs and the smell of 90 weight!

    Ever seen a 1934 Willys?
  • wil_37.jpg

That's pretty funky with the sloping front end and all... quasi-Pierce-Arrow headlight pods and strange side windows. And, it's from NZ! Ever seen that one, Geoff?

How about a 1939 Overland, the one with the hideous grill and headlights that look like sleepy eyes.

You like WHAT? And I thought you were . Ah, just (Hudson) kidding. :D

Let's add Tucker to the list.
  • Honda Element

    early 50's Nash...bathtub

    chrysler K cars
  • Honda Element, Scion xB (the box), '58 Edsel, '60 Pontiac Bonneville, Pacer wagon, the new GM full-size SUVs, the new Lincolns (hideous grilles!), the late '80s Toyota minivan (looks like an egg), most post-war British cars, nearly every post-war French car...there are so many!
  • How about that Mercury Cougar with the backward sloping rear window? Barf-o-rama. Another is the 80 someting Oldsmobile with the sloping back sides. YUK!

    Have a nice day

Pontiac Aztec by far, PUKE! To make it worse, it is based on a POS minivan.

I would also like to nominate the Chevy Avalanche -

As fas as the Scion B, I like the toaster idea. Maybe they offer it in appliance white with a a large push down lever for the rear hatch. Seriously though, I kind of like the Scions. I know, I know...

I like to see car makers stray from the beaten path, but not head into the rain forest.

    Matt (not Royer) :)
  • I will second the motion on the Avalanche and any other vehicle (I think GM is the only one) with that much textured black plastic in lieu of bodywork.

Sport Truck magazine did one a while back where they sanded all the plastic smooth and painted it to match the body. It looked better, but cost something like $3,000 in supplies and labor. I'm sorry, but if I go to buy a new vehicle, I had BETTER NOT have to take it to the body shop to make it look presentable!

Putting a handle on a Scion xB is on my list of things to do. I also intend to put a huge wind up crank on back a MG Midget, mounted on a bearing, with a simple set of gears and shaft to connect it to the inside of a rear wheel a la bicycle headlight, thus it shall spin as I am driving. I intend to drive this on I-75/85 through Atlanta at rush hour, wearing a three piece suit and tie.

The French were definately smoking the Alsace-Lorraine Reefer when they came up with some of their postwar designs.

And am I to assume we have a bunch of closet Dust Buster pilots on here, since my Pontiac Trans Sport comment garnered no affection?

Jamcoats got two of my picks, the Aztec (UGLY!) and the Gremlin. The rear end of a 1960 Edsel is the ugliest rear end ever put on any car, period, although the front was an improvement over earlier models. Also the AMC Pacer, the Mustang II, and early rotary engine Mazda sedans. Airflows are real ugly, too. I kinda like Studebakers, even the ugly ones.
  • I agree with most on here, especially: Pacers, Gremlins and Aztecs. And I hate all French cars, including their builders! LOL
  • Since they already had one on ugly cars, how about one of everyone's favorite burger joint?

Oh yeah, I forgot Citroens. Interesting cars but UGLY.

Late model (read: non- Stude) Avantis, Mustang II, 66 Charger (gasp!), Aztek, and H2 and 3's. Gotta come to the defense of the Scion, find one and sit in it, it's interior size changed my mind (but still too little under the hood).
  • seems we might need a tournament to get this one done. we might have to have three categories, and then the winner (or loser, however you want to look at it) goes into a sudden death OT....
  • Over the years there have been so many worthy of this honor. Each of the automakers have distinquished themselves worthy of bad design that made it into production. (The French seem to have a knack of doing it on a continual basis) I think the AMC Corporation has to have the lead as far as American Companies. Starting with the Early mid fifties Nashes (and Hudsons) to the Ramblers, the Marlin (an ugly 66 Charger wannabe), And then the Gremlin and Pacers. And to Top it off, who could forget the MATADORs. hard to say whether the sedan or coupe was worst. I think you need to do a top ten in each category. Some like the Corvair and Vega were also not only ugly, but mechanically poorly conceived.
  • The only thing a Vega is good for is its steering box, and a Mustang II for it's front suspension... Ironic that such crap boxes lend these parts to so much of the hot rod world.
  • Isn't it amazing to think that when looking at some of these ugly designs, there were people in the process who looked at them and said, "Ya, looks good, let's build that."

You mean my favorite car? I owned one just like the one in the pic from '89 to '94. It had a small block V-8 with a factory 5-Speed and posi-traction. Lots of fun for a dumb high school/college student.

Chevrolet actually offers the Avalanche two ways now. The plastic clad version and the full painted version. Have for a couple of years now. Guess which one sells the best? Not the clad one.
Another one that is going that way is the Honda Element (a giant Scion in my eyes, but more practical.)
I have to agree about the Pontiac Aztec being the ugliest along with any mini-van. All the others mentioned have one quality or another that makes them unique and therefore desireable to me, especially the Chrysler Airflow!

This photo is from Autoweek magazine. Funny stuff, ugly car. The Dodge Viper is a notoriously bad design. It doesn't have a continuous line from front to back. Compared to a Vette or a Ferrari...disjointed and mundane.

Have you heard the story about Ford trying to find a name for what was to become the Edsel? They hired some goofy poet who came up with equally goofy names. One of which was "Totally Utilitarian Turkatinga Turtle Top."
  • A Viper - ugly??? If you are talking an '04-'07 car, they aren't as smooth-looking as their '93-'03 predecessors, but ugly??? NOT!:p

The BMW's from 1998-2005 were dead-ugly! Ever see the rear sheetmetal on these cars? Talk about a disjointed design, especially on the 5-series cars. They are hideous!
