what engine displacement was available in the 1953 jet?

202 cubic inches. Someone will correct me if I am wrong but I think the only things that interchange with the Hornet are the valve tappets.0

202 ci flathead Six, available with a single carb or Twin-H carbs.
It is several inches shoter than a 232/262/308, but nearly the same size as a 212 splasher engine, making it ideal for early swaps.0 -
did they also have a twin H?0

(...of course, if it happened to be a convertible in solid shape, Frank would definitely be interested. It could even be missing the top irons. LOL!)0

Most of the original Jet convertible has now been swept out of my garage and into the trash bin. Talk about your investment going down the drain!0 -
Contrary to what some say, the only simililarity of the Jet motor to the earlier 212 is the piston size, the length of the connecting rods, and the diameter of the crankshaft connecting rod journals. These specs were obviously tied to the tools in the Hudson plant, but nothing but the pistons will interchange with the earlier splashers, and as noted, the only part that interchanges with the bigger series motors in the Step-downs are the cam followers. And these are identical with all Mopar engines, so Hudson obviously saved something here by buying them in! The 202 was 1/4" shorter in stroke, had four main bearings, pressure fed oiling, insert bearings, chain cam drive, inclined valves, etc. which resulted in 3 more horsepower from 10 cubic inches less in standard trim. A great motor, just too late on the scene for the times.

Geoff, if you were referring to my post, I meant "swaps" as an engine swap, not swapping parts between the 212 and the 202. There was a '38(?) Terraplane in northern Texas several years back where the owner had a wrecked Jet with a good 202, and a blown-up 212 in the TP and put the Jet 202 in the TP with very little effort. Plus, you have the advantage of a full-pressure engine over a splasher.0

I was just generally referring to the interchangability of parts between the two. I too have seen a '39 Hudson with a Jet motor. The overall length would be pretty similar as far as the block goes, and rear engine mount is identical. Frontmounts should not be a problem as they are pretty similar, and the exhaust outlet is roughly in the same place. The main thing would be shortening the drive shaft, as the Jet transmission has a long extension on it, and re-jigging the clutch throwout. It is amazing however, the difference between the two engines in sound and performance, which of course is explained by the different technology used. I used to have a '35 Terraplane, and it could climb hills like a mountain goat, and leave anything else far behind accelearating away from traffic lights, mainly due to it's lightning fast gear shift. However, it started running out of puff over 55 m.p.h., whereas the Jet just keeps on winding up. Best wishes

Geoff,
Would a Twin- H Jet engine fit in a 36 Terraplane? What would you have to do to convert it? Could you keep the floor shift?0 -
I really don't know about that. You would have to check the clearance for the carburettors inside the engine room. You can convert the Jet transmission to floor shift by using a Willys Jeep transmission lid and gear lever. These are a Borg-Warner box, and you have to remove the side-shift slelectors and fit the Jeep lid, which has the selector forks attached.
