What is the best way to remove the body? (1947 Coupe) I would like to do a frame restoration before I start on the body. Any good susgestions? I want to do it here at home. Lifting points and what to use so as not to damage the body. Thanks Rich Smithen

Hello Richs - welcome to the forum. I have a '47 Commodore 8 sedan but i have done a frame off restoration by making a rig out of 4X4 lumber and some hooks and chains. I have many pictures of it which you can see at:

Basically I used some angle iron and bolted chains to the floor where the car seats bolt to. I had some timbers that were put through the body and pegged to the posts of my rig. Then heavy-duty hooks. I used a car jack and some other timbers and lifted the body front to back a little at a time while ratcheting up the chains on the hooks. When the body was high enough I rolled the chassy out from underneath the body. Feel free to ask me any questions about using this method.
  • Hi Rich--- After you have stripped everything of of the body ie. fenders, hood, doors, trunk lid, bumpers, brackets & seats, the body will be light enough to hand lift off with about 3 people. Thats the way I did it on my 41 long wheelbase sedan. Good luck---Cliff Minard.

MY neighbors are actually very accomodating and have been kind enough not to notify the police to complain of my industrial activites or assembly line I set up in the driveway. haha They understand that my junky cars will look less junky if they let me work. LOL I'm not out to create any eyesores at least not for more than a few days at a time.

    Neat system!

I might just "design" one for my cherry picker that fits the 49 (why buy when you can build for 2x the price!)
