Window Removal on Stepdown

Does anyone know the correct procedure of removing the door glass and regulators and vent windows on a stepdown (not a Holloywood or Conv.)? I'm trying to get the doors ready for dipping. I have the panels off and I can't see a hole big enough for the glass to come out of. Does it come out of the window frame? Figured I better ask before I screw something up. I tried a search, but couldn't find the procedure listed. Thanks in advance.

  • jAY, YOU MUST PULL THE VENT WING ASSY FIRST. DONT FORGET THE SMALL SCREW ON TOP OF DOOR THEN ROLL WINDOW DONS AND DISCONNECT IT FROM THE REGULATOR, REG MUST BE LOOSENED, THEN PULL GLASS OUT THE TOP OF DOOR. JUST REMEMBER HOW IT CAME APART, ASSEMBLE IN REVERSE ORDER. k GAP HAS NEW VENT WEING RUBBER, GOOD LUCK AND HAVE PATIENCE, BILL ALBRIGHT
  • Jay, While you're at it wear long sleeves to prevent your arms from getting too cut up from sticking them up in the door cavity while trying to remove/replace the glass. If you have a closed car,now is the time you may want to get window channel to replace origional. No sense to put in new glass only to have it crack because you shut the door and there wasn't enough cushion left in the channel. BTW the window glass procedure is in the Hudson Body Manual 48-54. It will help you some but the vast majority of the time it skips through a lot of steps.

Jay - Didn't you buy a Body Manual? They have all the steps for removal of most doors, windows, seats, etc...I'd scan mine - but its packed for the move!

    Hey Jay

If you need to borrow a manual - you can borrow our manuals for for a little while.

I would agree with the others - now is the time to put in all new channels and seals for K-Gap. We replaced all of that on ours as well as new glass, you may want to look at your glass to see if it separating or starting to turn yellow. The side glass is flat and easy for a glass shop to make new with your old as a pattern.

I had Bell Glass install all of the glass, channels and rubber. I didn't do it as I was still recouperating from the Valley Fever.

I hope you are doing better.

  • Thanks everyone! I will get new channels and rubbers when I go to reinstall in the donor, but I'm just trying to strip the existing doors for dipping right now.

    Tom, I've PM'd you.

Thanks again and happy Holidays everyone!

I was surprised at how sketchy the descriptilon of this usually simple procedure was. I struggled last year with a rear door window (4 dr) and didn't find the manual much help at all. I have to say this, too, when I look at the pages and, especially photos in my reproduction manual, I'm reminded of how awful photocopies could be in the past. I hate to complain (I'm glad to have a copy at all). I just wish that whoever put forth all of that effort in the first place would have strived for better quality. Maybe one day there will be an excuse to redo the reproduction process with todays machines.

Hi Jay, I have the window channeling that you need for your step down. I just sent a window channeling set ($135.00 Plus Postage) for a sedan to Al Saffrehn in Az. Give me a call at (562) 947-1079 or Email thez@verizon.net

I just came back from seeing Bill A and took measurements of stepdown coupes and broughams..
