Is this even worth it?
Hello all. I've been talking to the owner of this grill and he wants $250.00 plus $100.00 to ship it from Oregon to SoCal. Now, I am with out one and don't see them too often but take a look at the rott on the bottom and give be your honest opinion and keep in mind when I start hand forming the new piece that I don't have a good example to look at. Do you even think it is worth it? The truth is if I could pay more for a clean one I would but can't find one. This grill is a 32' Essex.
Thanks, Joe
And Happy Holidays to all.

You have done the best thing you could have done ... post your problem here for the WORLD of HETers to see. I know there will those who will answer your original question, but the better part, I think, is you will potentially find a perfect example of the part you seek.
Merry Christmas, Peace and Joy and the very best of luck in the pursuit of getting your 32 Essex back to driving.0 -
personally, I would keep looking.0

I would keep looking also. I collect 32 and 33 Hudson stuff, but I have seen three of four of these essex shells over the last couple years. They are out there.0
-
I'd make an offer of $25 and $25 for shipping..... not $250 - by far.0

they are as hard to find as a 31 shell (but they do turn up)
I have paid for a 31 shell, 4 months ago from Peter Traxler and still to date havent recieved it and that was $60 for the shell and $225-00 for shipping Iam in contact with another person and he wants $200-00 for the shell that is good and comes ewith the mesh insert just waiting for the shipping price
it will be another mortage LOL
keep looking as Bill said the cost of repair will makeit to high and as for the chroming cost ah0 -

Joe...When I first got my 29 Hudson I wondered where in the heck am I going to find parts I need and this was about 18 years ago and no message boards just word of mouth and the HET club folks. It may take a little while but it seems if you keep asking someone has it or knows someone that does. Take care and Merry Christmas from your neighbor in Lakewood, Calif. Ron0 -
Grilles are big - you're going to pay an oversize rate whether the grille is good or no-so good. The $25.00 someone suggested won't get it across town, much less cross-country. I just shipped a grille that cost the guy nearly $90.00 just in shipping, and that was oversize ground.
On that grill, I'd keep looking for that price.0 -
Thanks everyone for the feed back, I feel a lot better now. I'm still collecting other pieces so I will take a deep breath and If I don't find one here maybe I'll try an add in the W/T news.
Thanks, Joe0 -
I agree, keep looking, but at the same time, I have rebuilt worse than that, so I would make an offer on it, definitely not more than $50. A skilled tradesman would rebuild it, but it would not be cheap. Or you may have a welding torch and the relevant skills yourself, but if not, forget it as an economic option.

Geoff.
Geoff, I think I could pull off a perfect repair on that lower section, fabbrication is a stronger skill of mine. I was mostly stressing over the general availability of them and the asking price vs. condition of that one and TIME. I'm going to make a lower offer and let Fate take it's course. thanks for the advice

Mike, I don't know who this Traxler guy is but he sounds like a jerk! Paid up front and can't get it shipped? What an a-hole! Hope he's not a club member. Has he called you lately?
