Is Doc Hudson Real?
I had an interesting comment made about my Hudson this weekend. For those who know, I have a blue 51 Hornet Club Coupe with plates that say DOCHDSN. While sitting at a traffic signal and guy pulled up and gave me a thumbs up and then asked " Is that thing real?" A strange question I thought, then it occurred to me that he had seen the movie Cars and thought that the Doc Hudson character was fictional. Makes sense as there aren't too many people who are familiar with the marque.
I was also at the beach yesterday (70 degrees in So Cal) and had a family with kids come up to the car. The kids were pointing and saying " look a Hudson Hornet". They took a few pics and moved on. Another great day in classic car paradise.

No surprize there..... I'll bet there are alot of people that think the character "Doc Hudson " is fictional. It's amazing though that most people that have never seen a Hudson Hornet are blown away. I went Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve and took my 54 sedan. I pulled into "Stew Leonards" World largest Dairy Store, and the Parking lot security gave me a special spot. He was about 20 yrs old and was fawning over the car. I asked him if he had seen the movie cars . He said yes but couldn't put 2 and 2 together. I explained to him that this was " Doc " in a different body style.
I guess even with the movie, people are still unfamiliar.....0 -

And the Daimler half of Daimler-Chrysler is working overtime to erase the Hudson name!!!! I've seen several automotive items in recent times branded "Daimler-Chrysler Hornet" for example. The American Muscle Body Shop (Grease) model comes to mind - marked '51 "Chrysler" Hornet.

My favorite benefit of the movie occured recently.
I had driven to work in the Super Wasp to take a co-worker's young son for a ride. He had heard I owned a Hudson and was curious as to what one looked like because he'd never heard of one. The young boy is a gearhead for sure and already has the ambition to be a "junk man" when he grows up.
I took him for a ride last spring, and he's been my buddy ever since.
I attended a banquet where the boy and his family also came. Just as the formalities ended, the Dad came up to me with a grin. He said, "as soon as you came in, Zack nudged me and said - there's the real Doc Hudson".
Proud moment for me.

Alex, remember where all the die-cast stuff comes from these days - CHINA - where it doesn't matter to them. Plus, some lawyer-type at D-C probably told the manufacturer of the toy to put that on there. I saw a couple of the ugliest toys at WallyWorld today - R-C controlled Gremlins and Pacers! Yes, both had "Licensed by Daimler-Chrysler" but did not say "AMC" Gremlin on it, just "Gremlin".
Time marches on...0 -
HEY, Watch it! An ugly Gremlin? NOWAY. I had a Gremy just out of High school and they are a Babe Magnet. It was green with a white stripe and Sun roof. All my buddies had muscle cars, but I did OK.
Now when I take the Commodore out for a spin, I swing by Wal-Mart and try and pick up the Door Greeters. I still got it.0 -

I get goosebumps when I watch Doc Hudson on the dirt track in CARS. I can just feel the pedal under my foot and the satisfaction of setting behind the wheel of a Hudson!
Here's a link to "the making of" Doc Hudson for a parade:

Only door gretters we got here are of the older type sure it would be cool to pick them up maybe some time ago they were in one of these cars.0

Speaking of people not being familiar with the marquee, even people who think they know what they are talking about, really don't. At the parts store the other day some guy asked me if that was my Hudson "Hawk" in the parking lot. (I don't even drive a Hornet, but I corrected him on the name anyway). Even when they're close, they call my Commodore a "Commander".0
