Shield - Drum Dust

As I am finishing my brake drums (decided to do all the work, except dressing the braking surface myself), I noticed that I have a square hole in each of them.

I take it that these holes are for the "Shield - Drum Dust", Group E-3, Group No. 8.260, Part No. 162479, 4 each, 1948-1952.

I know K-Gap sells a replacement plug the backing plates (Group C-1, Group No. 8.030, Part No. 63974, Cover - Adjusting hole, 4 each, 1948-1952).

How dangerous is it to drive my Hudson without these for a little while until such time as I locate a source and purchase replacements?

  • If they're the plugs for the adjusting slot, I think you'll be Okay without it for awhile. There's probably alot of old cars running around without them.
  • I took mine out to be a rebel.

I bet you could get something at autozone that will fit. Probably in the help section. Originals should be metal clip like, rubber ones would work just as well.

ALso, Let's be frank, how SOON do you plan on logging some miles on this car? I got to guess that your a little ways off of driving this thing in the next week or two.....

I think what Pacemaker was referring to is the Feeler Gage Hole Cover. See page 15-13 Figure 14 of the Hudson Shop Service Manual. The missing hole covers would only be a problem if you drove the car in heavy rain and flooded intersections deep enough to reach the bottom of the brake drums. This would let water in to the brakes through the Feeler Gage Hole and the brakes would not work. If you find a source for the Feeler Gage Hole Cover let us know.

I have done a lot of testing and parts gathering in the last three months. I have not done anything to the car that would leave it un-drivable for a long period of time. As soon as I get the drums and wheels back on, it is ready to go.

I am told this is more like a rolling restoration. Test, fix, repair, replace and test again only that which you can do in a few days.

Come on down to Johnstown the weekend of the 20th. Dinner at the top of the Incline is on me.

That could be them. I know some cover goes in because I only had one left and it fell apart when I was using the wire brush to clean the surface.

kind of a similar approach as I have with my hudson. Since I got it back out from storage, I bet outside of the twin H install, I did little to keep it inactive for any period of time. Even in the light of some items that should be addressed, the car is more fun to keep running, even in a general state of repair, or dis-repair.

I plan on painting it again this spring/summer and I think that it will be down for some time, meaning out of commission. I got some more stuff to accumulate, before it goes under the gun, such as front and rear windshield gaskets, front and rear vent window gaskets, and I might as well look at glass channel while I'm at it. Also, to be a bit ambitious, if hudsondad is able to locate the OD and driveshaft that goes with it, (yeah, we lost a transmission and driveshaft, go figure) I might try my hand at getting the OD working, and put in a new clutch disc, as well.

As far as Johnstown, we bought a hudson out of there in the mid 80's, been there. Probably not coming back anytime soon, but if you're offering up a meal, heck, I might take you up on that. Just for the record, you might want to consider something along the lines of a buffet, I'm sort of a big guy. hehe...

Anyway, if it's any consolation, I got one of them covers laying on the front seat of my hudson, I didn't put it back on yet, since I was still screwing around with the brakes, I'l probably lose it before I get around to putting it back on.
