Here are my finished wheels and new tires. Still has blueing on the white walls.

The almond cream really looks better than the pale yellow that was there before. The caps will be rechomed at some point. But for now will polished professionally. Stickers will be ordered from K-Gap.

Those wheel covers are most likely stainless steel and should polish up fine. No need to chrome plate. I like the wheel color.. what was the paint code?

    Thanks, Davew

Thank you. I looked at about 50 colors in the range of the OEM pale yellow. And this one stood out as Me Me Pick Me.

Would stainless steel from that era have some rust spots? Maybe it is just reaction from pet stains.

Anyway, the coating is a base white, and double almond cream powder coating. I'll have to dig in the box to get the code. It is a standard color for the coating manufacturer. I was given a left overs to use with laquer in case of a nick.

Exactly what are you talking about?
  • Ed , What you have are the early 50 full size caps that were chrome plated and therefore will rust. This carried over to the 51 model year and by the end of 51 all the caps on the Hornets and Commodores had been switched over to an all stainless steel construction. They were lighter and did not rust. they were used up to the end in 54 with slight design modifications. you can tell if you have an all stainless cap by the lack of a galvanized/rusty inner clip ring on the reverse side of the cap.
  • Where are the pictures????

At the top of the page. Take it from me, they look nice. Or were you asking for pictures of pet stains?

Yes, you are absolutely right. I had forgotten about those transition caps. I had two on my 51 Hornet many years ago and soon replaced them with stainless. That was a carry over from the earlier caps with the different emblem. They had a habit of rusting in the deep first goove. probably because the chrome plating got masked by the deep groove. Unless one was a die hard purest, a good highly polished stainless set would suffice. Lots cheaper too..I think the chrome shortage brought on by the Korean conflict caused many parts to be witched over to stainless. Wish the tail and parking light housings for 52 had gotten the same stainless treatment :D
