  • No idea, but I'm considering switching to one of the classic car insurers because of cost. My liability insurance for the Jet is about $400 a year, the insurance co that advertises on classicar.com quoted me around $100 a year for full coverage. My only hesitation is the restricitions they put on driving to work. I like to drive my Hudson to work 2 or 3 times a month, but that may have to stop.

Check what the companys med pay maximum is. J C Taylor's maximum med pay is only $1,000, which will not even cover a "hangnail" !

I have Hagerty on both my Model A and My Hudson and they don't care how far I drive them. They don't want you to drive to work ( I don't do that anymore anyway )and you must have OTHER insured transportation. They are old car people that know we drive our cars. I got tired of all the "you can'ts" from JC Taylor.
  • i am insured with RACV here in aus, it is insured just like any other car, full comprehensive coverage, my insurance is cheaper than that of my sisters 99 model toyota corolla and because i havent made a claim in over 5 years i went straight to rating one. and im not even 25 yet!
  • Sorry, i can't agree with you, i found out that it's not the way i thought.

i tried hagerty, but they won't allow errands. nice folks on the phone, but i like to run errands in my old cars. regards, tom
  • What good is a car if the insurance company doesn't let you drive it anywhere? I'll get the best insurance I can get, but its going to be a daily driver. I hate parades, so what good is that hobby insurance?
  • If you're going to build a daily driver, buy daily driver insurance. If you're not, then go collector. I myself have Hagerty, and can vouch that their customer service and underwriting policies are good. Hagerty has no mileage limits, however you are asked to provide yearly mileage estimations in three categories, and if I remember correctly, they are Pleasure, Club events such as touring, and car shows/parades. This is done for underwriting purposes. As far as driving to work now and then, or going on an errand, so what. The destination is not important, nor does it need be disclosed in the event of an accident. I don't see anything in my policy documents specifically preventing work or errands. While they may tell you on the phone not to do it, there's no practical reason not to. It is just their way of discouraging folks from going shopping daily in a covered auto, driving to work frequently, and so forth. Driving to work occasionally or going on an errand would fall under your Pleasure driving category, which is certainly covered. I hope this information has been of some assistance, insurance is something I know a little about as my mom has been a broker for 40 or so years.

I HIGHLY recommend you see this article concering collector insurance, provided by the Horseless Carriage Club of America:

I have been with Grundy Worldwide for 13 years and never had a problem. Rates are reasonable and no mileage limit. You set the value of your car and go from there. Nice folks to deal with.

I've had J.C. Taylor insurance on my '40 for 22 years and on my '55 Chevy PU before that. Never had any problems or concerns. Premium has been $71 per year for the past several years. I've also had business dealings with Heacock and they are excellent folks to deal with and have a well-respected product. In California the Auto Club has a very good old-car product, but I believe you have to have your daily drivers insured with them. Don't know about AAA in other states, but its worth looking into.
  • Hagerty took care of me very nicely after I had four cars damaged/destroyed in a tornado nearly four years ago. Highly recommend them!
