Drag Race Invite...
Guys,
I was issued a invitation from Ted Harbit to pass along to the Hudson drag racers out there. Ted and several of the Studebaker drag racers have a drag
race scheduled at Osceola Dragway in Southbend, Indiana during the 2007
Studebaker International meet on friday the 22th of June.
Any Hudson drag racer who wishes to show up and race is more than
welcome. (I was told a pretty low cost so we all can afford it.)
Those of you who are interested can find a map to the drag strip at this
link: http://www.osceoladragway.com/Racer/racerinfo.htm
(I would take a more indepth look on Mapquest for better directions if you
are interested.)
The rules there are basic, you will need a radiator overflow, seat belts and
a helmet for cars quicker than 13.99 but those of us that race know this.
Also no passengers will be allowed to make a pass with the vehicle, drivers
only.
I plan on showing up there for a little fun with my 50 Pacemaker. This is a
chance to show some of our fellow Orphan guys that we can run (hopefully
some we will Out Run) with their toys!
Let me also say that most of you really need to show up to see Ted run
the ChickenHawk twin turbo Studebaker powered 51 Commander Starlight
coupe of his. This alone will be worth the price of admission as its a low
10.00 second quarter mile a$$ kicker that will impress you all.
The Studebaker guys are worth meeting as they all are some of the nicest
guys you will ever meet.
So all of you know I am still planning the Drag Race at Muncie on saturday
of the National meet in July. Once I find out all the details for July I will post
a seperate notice here.
thank you,
PaceRacer50

Just so you know Ted is 71 years old and one of his drag cars is a '63 4spd (supercharged) Lark. Ted routinely shows up at the Muscle Car Drags in MI and kicks but in his Lark, against some very serious competition!
Here is a recent article about Ted and his Chicken Hawk:

Wish it wasn't so far for us! That would be fun:D

Yea the timing isn't right with the nationals one month later.
Even though I live in Indianapolis its not an easy track for me to get
to. Takes me about 4-1/2 hours if the traffic cooperates which never
does seam to happen.
Harcoequip what have you gotten that Mopar powered Hudson coupe
down to? Make any improvements for quicker et's so far this winter?

I grew up 10 miles east of that track.....0

The car has gone a best of 10.06 @ 134 on two occasions. We are currently tearing down the engine just to make sure everything is OK. We may change the cam, as this one was not ordered for this particular engine. I am currently in the process of finishing up the frame on my 47 sedan, which should be about 500lbs lighter than Dads 49. My car should be able to certify with NHRA to run 8.50 so if everything works out at the end of this season we will be putting the big engine in my car to try and run mid 9's at some Nostalgia races I have a few updated pics here: http://groups.msn.com/HudsonEssexTerraplaneBulletinBoard/hudsonspeedparts.msnw?Page=30

Wow....What do you do to a Hudson 308 to get that much speed?0 -

In our case you pull it out and replace it with a 500" Mopar! We still have the 308. In fact it was a hot rodded 308 it was built years ago by Ben "B.B." Blackburn, Tim Flocks mechanic/engine builder when he won the NASCAR title.0 -

I got to say, as it was said before, If these guys got a 10 sec pass with a 308, then they are certifiable geniuses...
I think these guys are using MOPower (mopar)
I don't know what you could do with a 308 to hit a 10 sec pass..... maybe in the 1/8th mile, but a 1/4, no way. Even the salt flat cars with 308's only turn a top speed of 130's I think. and that's a lot of time to get there, and high rear gears.0 -

I was thinking that maybe there was something I missed from Uncommon Engineering in Indianapolis, IN that may have been able to put a Hudson down range like that. Some turbo/super charged nitro combination....
Oh well....a man can still dream.0
