My new Commodore 6

Here's the first pic of my "new" 1950 Commodore Six. It finally got delivered yesterday. I haven't had any time to mess with it, my inlaws arrived in town last night, so I've been entertaining them instead of playing Hudson.

It made the 15 mile trip from my store to home ok, but will need some sorting out to make it a reliable driver. For those wondering, this is the 50 C6 that Dave Kostensek had advertised in the last issue of the WTN.

I'll post more pics after I get a chance to clean it up.

Thats a funny looking Jet:p Is this your first stepdown? It looks like decent car, can't want to see more.

So you are the lucky buyer! Best wishes and have lots of fun. I saw Dave's ad in the WTN and gave him a call to see if I could run up to his place in Williamsfield and kick the tires. But, alas, he mentioned it was already sold to a fellow in LV. The price was right for a reliable driver. Looks good in Texas Tan. ArtS
  • Thanks for the kind comments. This is my first stepdown, I was really surprised how easy it drives, especially since it's riding on prehistoric bias ply tires. It looks better in the pics than in real life, but I'm pretty psyched about it. When I saw this in the WTN, I figured this would be my best chance for an affordable stepdown any time soon. Plus it helped that it was being sold by a trusted member of the HET club. Hopefully I'll have some more pics snapped tomorrow morning and get them posted.
  • Congrats on the purchase! Have to see it one of my trips up to LV.

I'm really liking that Texas Tan color.

Congrats on what looks like a dang good vehicle!

I had the good fortune to buy a 1950 Commodore 6 sedan from the original owner here is Escondido. I have put over 25,000 miles on it with very little maintenance. I drove it to the HET Nationals in Nashville and in Seattle. It is a great car and I do plan to totally restore it some day. I have been busy restoring a 1936 Terraplane series 62 - 4 door sedan and I have to finish it first! I am sure that you will enjoy driving this car. Definitely lose the bias ply tires and get radials. I drove 4,600 miles RT to Nashville on bias ply tires and it was terrifying. I radials when I drove to Seattle and it was great!
  • Radials are a priority, but I don't feel like spending the big bucks on Wide Whites for it yet. Maybe I should take the radials from the Jet and put new WWW's on that.

Or......anyone running plain blackwalls on their stepdown?

IMHO, blackwalls look decent on Pacemakers and Supers, but the WWWs make the difference. The wide whites greatly compliment all of the extra trim on the Commodores.

I bought regular radials and put the narrow white strip out, I couldn't spend the extra $$ for the tires with so many other things to work on. If I had it to do over, I would put the black side out.

Put your bias ply WWW's on ebay. They seem to be the rage amongst the traditional rodders. The older they are (and in decent shape), the higher they will sell. Probably some rodder close to you who would pick them up.

Anything would help defray the cost of whatever tire you intend to run.

I run radial blackwalls, and I like them. But then, neither of my cars are what I'd consider WWW material either. Hornets and Commodores are extra classy, they kinda favor the WWW's.
