Valve Lifter Hardness Question

What is the story about the hardness of Spalsher 6 valve lifters? I replaced the cam thrust washer on my 1940 6, and have heard that the cam followers must be reground, then rehardened. Am not sure my motor needs this, so two questions: First, what are the symptoms of needing that service? Second, who does it? and a Third: Is work necessary on the cam also? Thanks, Paul.

  • Paul,

Can regrind your lifters. No work on camshaft required if visual inspection shows no serious defects.

  • Hi Paul,--- The cam followers should be reground if you can not adjust the valves to where they are completely quiet. When these engines were new, they sound like a sewing machine when running. if you were to pull one of the lifters for inspection, it would be readily discernable that they would need grinding because of the uneven wear pattern.
