Car Shows

I've been away for a few days amd missed a lot of the malarchy on this board, but before I get to topic, I'd like to make one observation, and ask a couple of favors.

First, I see why many folks here don't drive their Hudsons often; they can't fit their egos into the interior.

Secondly, let's go back to grammar school etiquette. I am as sensitive as the next person but let's not try to get overly offended at a post. If you don't like something, don't respond.

Third, if someone's got experience with a particular parts provider, please contribute in a TACTFUL manner, i.e. if you're going to pit one supplier against another, do it on the basis of their workmanship, price, etc., not a personal popularity contest. I'd like the experience of other members when buying costly parts or services.

This board can be used as an instrument of harmony or an instrument of dissent, and I'd much prefer the former. Activities of late make a person not want to participate as often, and that is not what our hobby needs!

NOW, ON TO TOPIC:

My '29 Hudson will be appearing in the 36th annual O'Reilly World of Wheels custom auto show here in Birmingham, one of the ISCA (International Show Car Association) circuit shows. I'd like to know what other NON-HUDSON shows our folks are participating in now, or in the near future. Hudson shows are great, but anywhere we can get outside exposure I will take it. I'd like to know how often a Hudson is shown in an ISCA show, especially an original one; mine may be the first in many years if at all. This particular event is a three-day indoor show in the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex with over 100,000 attending.

Get them out there and show them!

James you are so right, lets Drive them and Show them.
  • ...And don't be afraid of the judges!

ISCA shows are more for the chromed driveshaft and brake drums crowd. Darryl Starbird does his little escapade here and in Tulsa (Wichita, too, I think). I haven't been to one of his little fixed shows since 1988, when one of our club cars, a '64 Belvedere race car, got third place in "Best Truck". The ISCA shows do not impress me at all.

I do plan on bringing the Terraplane to our local Mopar show, where AMC, Nash, and Hudson are in their own class.
  • I participate in as many shows as possible here in the local area and many are all commers non specific events.

I maintain a strict personal policy... I NEVER ENTER MY WASP in the judging competition NEVER..When asked why I simply respond that I do Not have a Trophy Wife, why would I have a trophy car...LOL

I forgot to add tho that the little woman is a trailer queen.
  • This particular ISCA show, and the one in Chattanooga, both done by Motorsports Productions Inc., have a class in addition to the ISCA competition - the Gold Star series. Gold Star cars are held to high judging standards, but deductions aren't made for small rock chips and road wear, and undercarriages and trunks aren't judged. Some of the Gold Star cars in my opinion are much better cars than the straight ISCA stuff, they're meant to be driven and enjoyed. The Hudson will be a Gold Star car. Engine compartments are still judged, but small amounts of grime in inaccessible areas, such as between the motor and firewall, aren't discounted. It will be a great show. Many of the ISCA cars are beautiful creations, and it is great to have a show where street driven cars can show with them.
  • James..Did you post any pictures of the 29 B&S Hudson your friend bought ?
  • GEE I got a trophy for the best 33 Terraplane at a show once.WHOOPE DOO. I also think we need to get our cars out, that is what they are for.
  • I take my 49 Commodore to all the car shows in the area. I never got a 1st place like I have with some of my other cars, but the reaction of the participants is worth going to the show alone. The judging of the car shows is more of a beauty contest ( I am a MAACC Judge, so I really know and understand the limitations of what can and can not be judged ), but that is not the point. Having people see the old Hudson and remember when they, or their fathers had one just like it, or knew someone that had one, is worth attending the shows and entering the car. If I totally restored the car to perfect original condition, it would not win against the modified cars with all the chrome and show paint jobs - but I am O.K. with that. I want to drive my car, not trailer it.

  • Ron,

Not yet. It is a Briggs body, Town Sedan, short wheelbase of course. Right now it is ancient rattle can flat black from top to bottom and has freshly painted Ford Blue wheels. It has the wrong size tires on it, 4.75/500-19, and looks like it's dropped about 6 inches. I have some pictures taken and I will scan them probably later today. Been meaning to do that. All the top bows are there and I've had numerous requests to photograph that. Send some pictures of your '29 Standard, I like the Trippe lights.

I think the ISCA shows are great. The last one we did was in 2004.We had a 53 Hornet hdtp. and a 46 PU.It was great when the ISCA judges came around to class our cars. The truck was put in a mild custom class because it had a 308 but just a 2bbl.carb.,but they looked at the Hdtp.and started to put it in a Custom class also.I stood there listening to their conversation and one of them talked about the 2 carb's[Twin-H]was some kind of custom manifold. The head judge said no that he believed they came out with that, but the chrome Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels were something that had been added.I saw him looking for the correct custom category, and I told him the wheels were factory. He really didn't believe me so I was prepared,I had Jack Miller[Miller Motors]send me a blank new car order sheet for 1953 and the optional parts and accesory booklet too.I provided these to the judge and he looked at them, verified them and was real good about it.He said that he had been doing this for 10 years and it just goes to show you that you learn something new a every show!

I think ISCA runs Chicago's world of wheels and there's some locals here who usually manage to get 2 or 3 Hudsons stock or custom in McCormick Place.
  • The Darryl Starbird ISCA shows suck and are a waste of everyone's time.

When a show classes a race car as a truck, it's a waste of time. This show can't tell a Corvette from a snowplow.

  • Chalk another one up for Hudson, the '29 won First in Class this weekend at the 36th Annual World of Wheels in Birmingham. 303 cars present inside the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex and over 100,000 in attendance over three days. Many questions answered, many folks interested, and many who had never heard of Hudson now know. Several children associated it with "Doc", and more than one person I spoke with didn't know "Doc Hudson" was a real car until seeing this one, albeit two or three generations earlier. Overall a great weekend.
