Garage Air: Good Enough for Now!

I finally wrapped the 220v wiring and compressor install.
I've never done the wiring myself before, but it should be pretty close if not to code. Don't be too hard on me!
I ended up wiring in a new sub-panel for the shop, then down the road I'll be able to cut all the power to the shop from that main.
Since this is a temporary location for the compressor (this spring I'll start working on a "fully permitted compressor shed" to move it outside) I didn't get an airline dryer (300.00 from HF) but made up some copper tubing with drains and a filter/regulator...this should suffice for now...
Note the 3/8 hose output for the pressure blaster!
Wow! the materials for the wiring and piping where nearly as much as the compressor itself - if copper is so expensive why are my freakin pennies only worth a penny each? :eek:

I'll pass up the invite for the museum, but I'm thinking about heading out there to go shopping at the outlet malls and then joining the crew for lunch.
In regards to the Garage Air... Wow! I'm not familiar with the larger compressors, but it looks impressive. Our third car garage is unfinished and I want to add electric outlets and overhead lighting, insulate, and all that good stuff. With a 12 foot ceiling in there, I've got just enough room to get an auto lift in there, one of these days.0 -
Hi Dan It looks great . I made one just like it for my shop . The only difference Is after talking to a man who dose body shop air for a living said to use two inch PVC pipe . He said It is harder to push water up a two Inch piece of pipe then a 3/4 in. one . And more volume . I have a trap at the compressor before the pipes an one big one after the pipes . It must work because I sand blasted and painted and never got a drop of water in the big filter. The cost Is considerable cheeper . The most expensive part was the valves. Dan, I'm an electrician, and besides not knowing what's inside your panel, that looks good. Nice and neat and well made. That setup will serve you well, good work.0

The sub-panel Siemens 125amp panel 8 space and 16 circuits - it's currently fed from a 60amp breaker main panel to a 60amp main on the sub-panel with 6 gauge (will probably change to a 100amp main down the road) and 30 amp breaker and 8 gauge wire-thru-3/4 EMT conduit to the compressor.
I went with copper pipe because it has better cooling characteristics than PVC (cooling and condensation are paramount to trapping the water before the filter) and the compressor had a 1/2" outlet so I went with 1/2" Schedule L copper to the filter, with 3/8 NPT outlet for the blaster hose and a 1/4 NPT to the 50' rollup hose (the only way to go in my book..no rolling up hoses!)
The only leaks are at the filter! They're small and don't even make noise..I have to put soapy water on it to see them..so it should seal over time.
I do have and use hearing protection and safety glasses/shield - but this big 5Hp Devilbiss badboy is quieter than my "6hp" oil-less CH compressor and it can pump itself back to full pressure while using the tools instead of having to stop andwait!
Thanks again all...that little project only took me 4 days to gather all the parts (several trips during)...hopefully next time I do this I can cut the time in half!0
