49 Hudson Commodore Six
Hello everyone! Just found this site and so far I'm having a lot of fun with it
anyway... I figured I'd ask about the 49 Commodore Six. I'm living in Hawaii right now and have ran across one on craigslist: http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/car/269506382.html
I am very interested in this car and have been researching what I can on it. Basically, I am wondering what everyone's opinions might be on this car (obviously based off the pictures and little description he gives). I have not contacted this person yet, first I was hoping to get some tips on what to really look closely for on this car--as far as little problems that could turn into big ones quickly that would make this car too much trouble. Most of my experience with cars is on new ones, and that's mostly learned on my own from taking parts off and putting them back on, haha. So, with classics I fear I may be a little lost at the moment. I do know I LOVE the look of the Hudson, well classics in general. Im just over the whole "modern" car thing I guess... Well, any tips or suggestions would be so greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks!!
Brian

First thing I would want to know is where is the rust he talks about in the ad. From the picture is looks like the area where the rocker panels would be is rusted. You have to check the frame rails on this cars for rust. If you can get over to see if take a flashlight and a ice pick or awl and get under it and check out the frame. Give it a good look over under there. If the rust is not bad the price is not bad. You need to really poke the frame rails and make sure they are solid.0

Good point on the frame rust issue. If that car has always lived here in Hawaii that could be a problem (ocean salt), depending on how it was stored and kept up. I was thinking rust around maybe paint cracks, for whatever reason (my inexperience I guess), I didn't even think of frame rust. Straight frame I wondered about, but didn't even think of frame rust. Thanks!!0

Stepdowns are unibody construction so the frame is integral to the body. And Stepdowns are prone to rust in the frame. Usually behind the rear wheels and under the truck and in the sides under the rockers. If you have frame rot in this area you better be a good welder or know someone who is because you will spend more than the asking price here just fixing that. Price is a tad low so I wonder.....0

There's a couple Hudson Club members in Hawaii you might want to get in touch with. No '49 Commodore 6 listed so it may not be one of theirs or they do know about it and passed it up for one reason or another but either way you might want to make contact with one of them and if you do end up buying the car joining the club. They could tell you if it's a good deal or not.0

Is that Don Amichi standing by the car? I though he died years ago. A quick check of the HET roster doesn't show the car or that tele number. But you're right 51h, you have to be careful about frame rot issues. I equate a car frame to a building foundation. If you have to invest tons of money to get a good structure, it won't add value. Reason being, people expect the structure to be good. So, regardless of how much money was invested in paint, upholstery or mechanical conditions on a car, they're almost worthless (as a whole) if the frame is shot.0

thanks for all the replies! i will definitely keep the frame condition in mind. Dave53-7C and Aaron D. IL, you both mention a Hawaii group, how do I find this? Probably a feature of this site huh? I'll poke around a little more and try to get in touch with someone... maybe I can talk them into coming with me and looking at it
Thanks again!!0 -

Aiea??? It couldn't be - I was stationed out at Barbers Point Coast Guard Air Station in the late 1960's. I remember running across a step-down Hudson in the Aiea area (Pearlridge Mall wasn't there then).
It couldn't be the same car, could it??? Never did get a real good look at it - but as I recall it didn't look all that bad. It was parked at a gas station in that area.

Members listed in our club roster are located in:
Kurtistown, Kihei, Hilo, Keaau, Kailva-Kona, Kula, and Kailua. The people in Hilo and Kailva-Kona each have a 51 stepdown (48-54) era Hudson. Are you close to any of these towns? It would be a good idea to join the HET club and your local chapter for help and advice from nearby members.0 -
Hilo and Kona are on the big island, not sure about kihei, keaau or kula... never heard of those, but kailua is on this island.
barber's point in the 60s? awesome! wow... i feel so younghehe, j/k im actually stationed at pearl harbor (im air force though, joint command). im a young'n at only 27...

Brian,
My name is Jeff and I live on Maui in Kihei, Kula is also on Maui up in cowboy country. I have a '46 Super Six that I am working on, Edmund up in Kula has a '46 pickup and a '32 or '33 Essex. The Essex is an original Maui car. I was surprised to see a listing for a Hudson for sale on O'ahu. Looks like a decent car. I live on the south side of Maui near the ocean and you are kind of on the south side of O'ahu I think, so the salt air is not as bad as the north shore. Hopefully the rust is not that bad. I have had no rust build up on my car yet, but it has been in my garage for quite sometime now. There are alot of helpful folks on this forum. Well good luck, let us know if you get it.
