'46 Wiper Motor

While I was re-wiring under the dash I decided to take my wiper motor out and find out why it was so hard to operate by hand. I cleaned it out and put it back together and It moves easier. I was wondering if I need to add a little oil inside or is it supposed to be dry? Thanks,

Jeff

  • I think I read that Hudson originally used bees wax on the inside, just enough to make a seal from the housing to the wiper divider( I don't know what it is really called but it is the pivoting divider inside ) I use a light coating of slick 50 chassis grease in mine.

You might want to oil or grease the pivot points on the linkage, and the wiper transmissions themselves: grease the chain and shoot some 3-in-one down the shaft (fremove the wiper arm first of course).

As to the inside of the motor, you can purchase some neats foot oil (used for treating leather shoes) and suck it into the motor (using the vacuum intake pipe and a short length of rubber hose; move the arm on the outside of the motor to create the suction). This should sit for several days, and it will soften the leather seal inside the motor, which should cause the motor to run better. Or you can ship the motor and about $60 to Ficken's on Long Island, and they will rebuild it.
  • also check the vacuum port at your intake manifold. When I had my carb off a couple of weeks ago I just happened to look down inside and I noticed that the port for the vaccuum line to the wipers was 99 percent plugged with grit, so I shoved a rag down the manifold to below the port and cleaned it out with a small screwdriver. I was surprised at how much gunk was in there. The rag caught it all and then I used a vaccuum cleaner to make sure. Don't use too much neatsfoot oil as it will make leather swell like crazy. But it sure works.
  • Thanks everyone!! My Hudson is not running yet so the only way I can test it is by moving it back and forth with by hand for now. I added a little grease and it moves easy now. I also lubed the chains and any linkage points I could find, everything moves freely now. I actually started to take the wiper motor out a long time ago and just gave up. Man it was tough. Its alot easier without seats in the car! My car is totaly apart and I am hoping to get it painted soon so I can start to put it back together. Currently I am replacing alot of wires that were in bad shape. Once I get it running and see how the wipers work I'll decide weather to rebuild it or not. Thanks for the info,
