What should I get for a replacement vehicle for my totalled Tahoe?

Okay, so I found out there is no chance in fixing my tahoe, at least by the insurance company....

they totalled it.

Since I probably tread the line by doing a poll on here, I feel at least I can solicit popular opinion. This might be the closest I come to a hudson coupe for a bit, so should I try to figure out a way to get something to work towards, or just get another beater Tahoe?

Probably will end up with 8K in hand, all said and done.

maybe a nice Nash Met would be in order....

anyway, what does anyone think? any hudson coupes out there running driving, that need cosmetics, some interior work, reasonable? don't need a hornet, prefer a short wheel base. any other suggestions?

Perhaps I can survive with a PT cruiser, and a hudson as a daily driver, that would be pretty cool.... of course, when I get back to reality, I figure I'll be buying a tahoe....

IMHO - I would buy a low cost truck 4x4 for 3-6k and take the rest and apply towards your Hudson or another one.

You won't have any payments ~ Yipee! 4x4 Trucks always hold their value better than 2x trucks, cars, or SUV's and you will always find that there is something to haul or get that won't fit in anything but a truck (drywall, plywood...)

For instance my 90 GM 4x4 cost me 7500 8 years ago - could probably pick one up for 3000-4000 today...mine has nearly 200k on it and still running the original motor (smokes a little when starting but passes emissions with flying colors) - best thing is it's bought and paid for...engine goes out...2500 for a crate motor and I'm back in business and the 90 isn't too fouled up with gadgets and trinkets in the engine compartment that make it so you need a degree in engineering just to swap motors out!
  • Hi, I don't know what you really want, but a local dealer(indepedent) has a very nice,30,000 mile Tahoe. I think its a '99 or 2000. Its a kind of silver color, with leather. She's asking $10,995. If I can help, give me a hollar. Steve
  • If you're looking for a cheap vehicle just for yourself, I suggest one of the following brands:

    1. Yugo

    2. Volga

    3. Checker

    4. Yamaha golf cart

If the hudsonwife and hudsonchildren are going to transported around by you in your vehicle of choice, you have to think of their safety first.
  • My vote is for a surplus M-60 or M1-Ax tank. I find they are virtually indestructable on today's highways. Gas mileage is a little weak but the safety factor is very high.
  • My Uncle has a Chevy 2500HD with the quad cab. So he has four doors, a truck bed, and 4x4 I believe. Sounds like it gets decent gasmileage something like 15 with a mix of driving. It's big like a Tahoe, but not so big that it looks like it would be hard to drive. They make 1500s like that, so maybe you could look into that. Room to haul people plus a bed to put stuff in.
  • I lean towards the Tahoe, for the roominess...

but figured someone would have an opinion. I wish a 4x4 truck would be a viable option, but I need the ability to haul 4 people, and even an extended cab is to awkward for that.

I think the messerschmidt might be a bit crowded...

That's just what he needs. That way, if something is in the way, he can just go over or through it. But can those models accomodate child seats?

That's what the truck bed is for ~ overflow passengers! Just get some jump seats out of a Subaru truck *remember those :p

You ought to get the Tahoe from Idaho for $10,995 and hire Navigator to bring it to you in Pennsy.

If one purchases one that was assigned to the Corps, they are all child seats. USMC = Uncle Sam's Mis-guided Children.
  • Hudsonkid,

If you want a fun car to drive, and I mean a kick-ass-scare-the-piss out of the guy or gal in the passenger's seat fun car to drive and still be a year around able to handle ANY and I do mean ANY weather condition then you need to go and drive a Subaru WRX 4 door of Forester Sport Turbo.

Here in Indianapiolis we get about the same amount of snow you get and with the all wheel drive it's like having a Mountian Goat. It is sure footed like this creature but has the accelatation like a Mountian Max snowmobile.

We have had over 2ft of snow in the last month and I have been driving like the guys on the World Rally Racing Circuit becasue the vehicle is that sure footed in the white stuff. Its been a ball while everybody else has been dreading it.

I drive a 2004 Subaru Forester FXT turbo automatic that is one a$$-kicking piece of machinery! It now runs mid 14.50's with my 400+lb lard a$$ in it and does the 60ft faster than any vehicle I have ever driven on public roads!

If you want to have fun in traffic, considering the hilly terain in the great state of Penn. then you need a Subaru. Once you own one thru a harsh winter with tons of snow you will understand.

Now I know that Subaru's are not American made (the turbo models are

ALL still made in JAPAN and YES I have friends at the SOA plant here in Indiana.) But if you are willing to drive a car that has been out of production for 50 years why should this stop you?

You only live once and until you drive one, OK let's be honest: until you take a Subie WRX out and flog the piss out of it how do you know its not the car for you?

If you enjoy being behind the wheel of a car, enjoy being on a hilly & twisty road, enjoy putting some distance between you and the guy in a Porsche behind you or running the yuppy in the Vette ahead of you down then this is the kinda car for you! Besides not having a tow vehicle for the HUDSON gives me more reason to take the Hudson out on the weekend and take a nice drive in a older vehicle.

At least go to a dealership and drive one, well flog the crap out of one and let that give you reason to make a decision.....

Good luck and glad to hear you are OK after the accident,

  • yeah, those WRX's are fun and fast. I go two friends at work that have them. The one is owned by a girl, and is fairly stock, I drove it a few times, and the other is owned by an insane person, that I rode in it once, it is far from stock, and scarrry fast. His should not be on the street. His is running high 11's and honestly, I took a ride in it, and was scared. I'm not mature enough to own a car that quick. He told me the other night he bought an STI motor, and is heading for 10's...

Yeah - but them rice burners just sound like pissed-off mosquitos buzzing around your ear when they rap them out...not the low rumble of a 8 cyl!
  • ford falcon! you just cant trash them

Funny I can't hear the exhaust on my Subie over the scream of the turbo at full boost. Sounds like a jet engine on takeoff...

I guess if that's what passes for power for you..;) Really though, I like turbos, they're economical for essentially something you can bolt onto a motor like a Hudson...it's just like big CI's motors better!

The real sound I think is cool is a motor with a blower and gear drive! Now that's something to instill fear into the guy sitting next to you at the stop light :D
  • It's been decided. I finally got a nice corvair greenbriar van.

    Always wanted one....

I might sell my hudson to finish it. These were very underrated vehicles, and are hard to find today

  • I think this is a great candidate for a mid-engine Hudson 308 engine swap!
  • Hi, If you still have the Tahoe, our local yard just(on Friday)brought in a 2000 Tahoe, roll-over, with what appers to be a PERFECT front clip. I'll check on the price if you want. Steve
  • Okay, for all you guys...

    I bought a tahoe. not a greenbriar.

Hudsondad would kick my a$$ if I bought a corvair.
  • nope, dark metallic blue, 98, the one I originally spoke of here. LS, limited options, 93K, 60/40 cloth bench, non heated seats, non heated mirrors.

it's clean. better miles. recent head replaced, 4WD switch replaced, intake manifild gaskets done, really new tires, etc...

felt good about it. need a new, or better steering wheel.

Too bad they don't make Ramblers any more - all the 440 series American's I had were go-fors in snow. Never got stuck, never had any trouble.

Actually drove one to work and back, a distance of 60 miles round trip with very little water in the radiator - it was around 0 to 10º below zero that day.

    Tough rigs.

    Hudsonly,

  • Okay, so I thought I would update all of you...

I had this Tahoe for about two weeks now, I have been working on it here or there, as time permits, and I got it where I'm pretty happy. Had a few issues that the guy I bought it from was happy to resolve, and now it seems to be a pretty good vehicle.

First issue was that it was leaking 90 weight from the front diff. Turns out the vented cap was messed up, and the oil they put in was contaminated with H20 (they had a garage fire, and assume the drum was okay, but had water in it) My diff got topped off with water, and caused some issue. They flushed it a few times, got it straightened out...

At the same time, I had a noise that was like a grind/binding/growl that I complained about, and asked to have looked at. It got progressively worse, until I finally dropped the thing off the other day, and told him to fix it, and not call me until it was done and right. I thought it was something major mechanical, and driving it with the ho-hum approach he seemed to have in regards to the noise, was not the right answer. I got a call a few hours later, and it turned out to be a major loose mounting on the power steering bracket/cast piece that was causing the annoying resonance at the 1000-1500 RPM range I detected. It drives great now.

Also, I got a light coolant leak on the right head, the one they replaced, that has a 1 year warranty, and it seems it was coming out of an exhaust manifold bolt hole. The fix on this was to teflon tape it, per a GM mechanic, they seemed to have heard of this before, but at the same time, he said keep an eye on it, we'll fix it within the year, since under warranty, as a shop, he get reimbursed for labor.

So, with a nice replacement steering wheel in place, factory floor mats, and a factory trailer hitch ready to install, It seems to be coming along just fine.

I'll have to get a few pictures up, in the next couple of days, of the replacement tahoe...

too bad a hudson coupe didn't come along...

 Water in the diff!? Did you run a carfax? Any other signs of flood damage? I have a hard time buying the "water in the barrel" story. I suppose anything is possible.

I was just thinking of the guy we called the "U-Boat Commander." He had a slight incident with his Ford truck at the launching ramp. His differentials (and engine and transmission) were full of water. We got the truck out of the river and running the same day and it wasn't any worse for wear.

    Good Luck

    Steve
  • no, the car was never in a flood. Everything checked out good on this one. This guys seems to be pretty fair.

I stopped over yesterday, and was shooting the breeze for a few, and found out he got a 41 Oldsmobile business coupe....

    all good for street rodding....
