I have a problem child, 51 Club Coupe that I have been working on for some time. It has a 56 308 with an adapter plate that is bolted to a 52 dual range Hydramatic, The unit will puke about a teaspoon out on startup, then some occasional drips while running. Things replaced complete front pump, torus cover twice , flywheel once . I have rebuilt several hydros both at work and at home and this one has me tearing my hair out. I have checked the anti drainback valve inside the torus cover moves freely. Runout in sealing surface on torus cover is .010, I know book calls for .005 but modern seals shouls be able to handle it. This car came to me with this problem, but none of the items has made any real difference. HELP MR. WIZARD !!! Lou

Dynolow, Is it leaking from the inside of the bell housing area?

Not between the bell housing and the front of the trans. case ?

    Rudy
  • Rudy, from around the the front seal area mostly. I have a drip from around one of the bolts that hold the flywheel and adapter to the crankshaft, guess I didn't get enough sealer on the threads. I am using Mazda sealer # 4 on the flywheel and adapters, we use this in front wheel drive case halves at work. It worked just fine on my 54. What are others using? Is CAT cement next on this car? thanks for any help Lou

Dynolou, We used a sealer made by Goodyear (felco bond) comes in a small bottle and is sometimes sold by ACE hardware.

Jack Clifford used to sell it. When i was drag racing with the Hydras that was the Stop-Leak for the Adaptor and flywheel to crankshaft.

I had a leak at the front pump where the seal is pressed in. The pump had small casting holes in it.

Before the bellhousing is bolted the the front caseput a layer of Felco Bond between the two. We have seen it leak between the pump gasket or o-ring and come out around the pump.

The small metal sealing ring that is just behind the pump seal on the pump nose is another one. If this seal ring has to much of and end-gap it will let HIGH pressure slip by the Lip-type seal.

( the seal ring seals on the inside of the torus wheel)

Hope this is of help. Rudy

Are you sure it's felco bond and not Pliobond? See ACE hardware web page.

You are right Mars, that is it. Thanks Much
  • Rudy, before pressing front seal on arbor press,I put Loctite on the outer circumference of seal. Because this is a 52 case, pump has a paper o ring, which I applied a thin bead of silicone sealer to. I believe that I also put a thin bead of silicone outside pump area between case and bellhousing. I thought that I had covered all the bases. RRRRR!!!! Lou
