308 Oil Pan

I am trying for the first time since I purchased this 52 hornet to replace the oil pan gasket. I have followed the steps in the manual, drop the steering, remove the flywheel cover and remove all the bolts. Simple enough. The pan won't clear the flywheel. It is about 1/4" to a 1/2' lacking in clearance. It looks like I might need to mess with the suspension. Anyone have any helpful hints?

Comments

  • loosen nuts on front motor mounts and rais engine 1/4 inch if this doesnt work, check the pan and make sure it is not an 8 cyl pan instead of a hornet
  • I suggest turning the motor slightly--The front of the oil pan may be catching on the counterwight of the crank--if your motor mounts are soft & weak do as Bill A. suggests.
  • How do tell an 8 cyl pan from a Hornet? And what if it is a 8 cyl pan?
  • When I pulled the pan on my car I dropped the centerpoint sterring then I loosened the motor mounts and placed a piece of 4x4 under the balancer. Had to wiggle the pan a little but it did come off.

    Hello 52,

if you have Hydramatic, you might have to remove the fluid coupling covers to get more rear clarance.

As you are taking the pan off, it's unlikely to be the wrong one. As mentioned, you have to take the flywheel cover off, and turn the crank to get clearance past the counterweights and rods.

    Geoff.
  • Since you have already stated in your original post that you have removed the flywheel cover just follow follow Randy and Bills advice. Turn the engine by hand until the crank turns out of the way, wiggle the pan a bit to see if it will come out if not remove the nuts from the engine mounts and jack the engine a little and the pan will come out.
  • How do I turn the engine by hand?

Use a flat blade large screw driver on the teeth of the flywheel against the bell housing. it moved a small amount each time you pry on it.
  • Gentlemen, it was the crank. Turned the engine and she slipped right out. Thank-you guys for the quick and helpful advice!
