Parts Manufacture projects?
Wow, got to thinking, there are quite a few items that the hudson community could benefit from having made....
throw out bearings
double groove water pump pulleys
double groove crank pulleys
oil pumps
steering and suspension parts
52-54 2 door hornet side trim
early rear tapered bearings
anyone else got anything to add to the list?

Hudsonkid,it's all about the $$$$,the 25877 T bearings are availible from Olcar bearing co.,they advertise in Hemmings The side trim??,do you mean the trim at the bottom of the doors for 51-53,if so,Max Merritt Packard parts has some moldings that are real close to that and are stainless,They actually make them to order.0 -
how about steering wheels
visors, especially to fit a 540 -
I vote that all Hudsons from 48-55 be reproduced as complete cars. Just think on quality taht could be had by combining some of todays technology and materials with the classic designs of Hudson Motor Cars.0

Daimler/Chryslers next retro project should be a '53 Hornet coupe, (since it is the best looking stepdown in the best looking body style) and put the 425 HP 6.1 Hemi in it with the 5 sp Auto. After the first year they can add a convertible version.0 -
If, by "parts manufacture projects" you are talking about a Club-sponsored manufacturing project, then the bottom line is this: is someone out there willing to volunteer their time to this project? Otherwise, it's merely a bunch of people saying, from the sidelines, 'wouldn't it be nice if the Club...'
One or two people would have to roll up their sleeves, step forward and approach the Club officers with a commitment to investigate a Club-sponsored parts reproduction program. They'd then have to poll Club members to determine which parts are really drying up (and which of those parts may be so expensive to reproduce that no individual or company could undertake the risk of making them on their own). They'd have to approach companies to see what it would cost to have the parts manufactured. And they'd have to determine what sort of real demand is out there for these parts, given whatever price-per-unit would have to be charged.
After all this, it would then fall on the shoulders of the volunteers to convince the Club and its officers that this is a worthwhile project. Apparently, over at the Kaiser-Frazer Club, there is indeed such a club-sponsored project called the Manufacturing Fund, but I'm not sure that this concept would go over with H-E-T members, due to some reactions I've heard in the past.
It's always good to think about how to improve our club and to make it easier to maintain our Hudsons, but in the final analysis it will be the willingness of individuals to step up to the plate and volunteer their time. The H-E-T Club, from the national down to the local level, is what it is today because over the past five decades a relatively few people have devoted an enormous amount of their time, unselfishly, toward activities that benefit large numbers of people; for this, they have sacrificed the time they might have spent working on their own Hudsons.
In the end, unless someone is willing to commit a fair amount of time and effort into researching a manufacturing project, any speculation as to what parts "the Hudson community" needs to be reproduced will remain just that -- mere abstract speculation.0 -
I agree with Jon totally.I also think that the reman parts should then be marketed thru the HET club store. That way nobody could say it was for someone's particular interest. It would be an interesting poll to publish in the WTN.0

I am taking such a census/statistics of the surviving cars the club knows about and we will know exactly which cars are most economical to reproduce parts for. With this information would-be parts reproducers will know what to pursue. So far 1951 is the most commonly owned Hudson model year among club members making up 10% of known survivors. That is cars the HET Club knows about. This of course doesn't mean that all the 1951's in the club need such and such a part..... I'd echo Jon in that there needs to be the drive to want to take on such projects because the leadership in HET doesn't delegate such tasks, such projects most often come from member initiative.0

I don't think that there is sufficient return on investment for these items. Huddy42 (Les) says he had very few takers for his reasonably priced tapered bearings. And how many will pay $200 for a dual groove crank pulley? I would if I needed one, but others will say it should be painted in liquid gold at that price.
Support the people in the Hudson parts business whenever you can, and they will continue to supply you with more and more Hudson parts.0 -
If I were to reproduce any parts, I would rather do it on my own, than have any specific club involvment. If the WTN wanted to run an ad, for free, of the parts I were reproducing, then that would be fine. On this level, I still would not use this "favor" as a decision to join, but rather allow them to make a source of needed parts available to their readership. I also would not pay to advertise said parts in the publication. I would not want their involvement. I feel there are many avenues to reach the persons that need parts, rather than relying on the WTN or the hudson club.
Please, let's not turn this into a thread as to why I am sour on the HET club, at this point in my hudson life. That is notmy goal in this thread, let's keep it on topic, thanks. Perhaps in a few years, my personal views might change.
Quite frankly, I am considering (not very seriously yet) looking into the undertaking of maybe one item, in the long term, not sure what, but seems there are a lot of local shops and such that might make it doable, to make a few items on short order, and keep the price reasonable. I got a friend that has great ability in several engineering programs that could easily draw up the item, and have blueprints generated, Perhaps even the program for turning this on CNC equipment, out of billet aluminum...
My personal pick would in fact be a dual groove crank pulley and water pump pulley set. The water pump pulley seems a lot easier to make happen, but the crank pulley would be a nice compliment...
Not sure how to work ahead on the crank pulley, A solid aluminum item would have to interfere with the engine harmonics, not sure what might be involved in creating some dampening, or something that would cushion this.
Maybe modifying a stock crank pulley?
Like I said, that's why the water pump pulley is quite a bit easier. I bet if done right, you could sell water pump pulleys for less than $1000 -
Upholstery kits in original repro materials for step downs would be great. Also 54 headlamp and taillamp chrome would be cheaper to buy as new repro than having oringinal pitted parts restored. How about the outside chrome and stainless rear view mirrors for step downs that have the extra pivot on the stem.0

We went through this exercies in the N.Z. Club, with requests that the club start gettin gparts made, and hold in inventory for club members, just in case they wanted to buy them at some stage in the future. Did a survey, got 50 replies, with 50 different suggestions of different parts! The club cannot get involved in this type of venture. And Hudsonkid, if you don't want people to comment on your sourgrapes attitude on the H.E.T Club, you should not mention it yourself.

Actually, as some of you may know, the Railton Club has gotten involved in the remanufacture of certain hard-to-find parts for the Hudson Eights of the 1930's. I'm not sure how this arrangement works, aside of the fact that one must be a member of their club in order to purchase the parts.
It may indeed come to pass, some day in the future, that the supply of certain critical Hudson parts does dry up, at which time the H-E-T may have to consider at least coordinating (if not actually paying for) the remanufacture of these parts.0 -
Here is how the AJS-Matchless motorcycle club does their spares program.

If you click on the Spares Lists on the left hand side, you can see that they just about repoped the Parts Manual. I am so envious.0 -

Yah a gas tank would be nice seems like they all have had big holes knocked into them at least the few that i have but they are useable and fixable0 -
As mentioned previously by Hudson Dad, I think a stepdown upostery kit in the matching style material and cut would be a winner.0
