I have to change the pan gasket on my hyro-matic in my 52 Hornet. If I drain the fluid and drop the pan and replace the gasket, I believe the filler is under a removeable piece in the front floor. Is that correct? I remember looking at this before, but not having a socket big enough or not being able to get a wrench on the cap. Can someone tell me the size of a socket to get it off. Also what is the correct fliud weight to refill?

You might consider also draining the fluid from the fluid coupling, which doesn't drain when you drop the pan (Drain plug is accessible through the small access panel at bottom of bell housing). That way you'll have pretty much all new fluid when you refill. Sorry I can't help with the wrench size ... my last Hydramatic Hudson was in 1957!

I'm not sure of what you are calling a cap,but the drain plug should be a 7/8th's,located on the back, bottom of the trans.pan.The drain in the torus cover that Park is talking about is a 7/16th's headed plug.Park is correct about draining the trans.completely, but you will have to remove the inspection cover around the flywheel. This is 2 pieces. When you have the trans pan down, inspect the kick-down arm-throttle pressure lever for looseness. If you have a hydramatic shop manual, you might read about maintenence.Hope this helps, back to work.

OOPs,I'm wrong,no access to the T/P unless you remove the side cover on the trans.
  • The size of the filler cap under front floor?

52 Hud,if you are talking about the hex looking nut, that is not the filler. The pass side of the trans.and the cap just pulls up.Something you need to kind of watch is that when you are filling the trans.,make sure that carpet and other foreign items don't fall into the fill hole.If you drain the torus cover and the trans.,the trans will hold about 12 quarts.First put in 8,start the engine and add the other 3-4 with it running.
  • !2 quarts seems like alot to fill the trans. The manual says 2 pints. What is the deal?
  • Don't know where you got 2 pints from, the capacity of a Hydramatic is 12 Qts this is to fill the tranny and torus. I did this change on mine last year. I bought a 10 gallon drum of tranny fluid. Took 12 Qts to fill it. Maybe 2 pints is a normal interval top up.
  • 2 pints won't even fill the pan. 11 quarts is what the manual calls for. The dipstick/ fill opening is under the floor on the passenger side of the trans tunnel just about under the bottom of the dash. Remove the inspection cover in the floor and there will be the dipstick directly below the cover. Like was said make sure that the area around the cover is clean so that no dirt, carpet fibers etc gets knocked into the trans while the dipstick is out ,or while you are filling the trans. No tool is required to remove the dipstick, but you might want to use a long transmission funnel for the refill.
If you look at the brake master cylinder you will see that it takes a good size wrench to fit the cap on it. I belive mine was 1 inch but I won't swear to it. The master cylinder access is under the carpet on the drivers side about 6 inches in from the door.
