If you're replacing the regulator, you need to polarize the new regulator first before running the car. The regulator should have instructions for doing this. If you can't find the instructions, I'll do a little research for you and get back to you.
Basically, regulators are build to work with both positive and negative ground cars. But you have to "tell" them what the polarity is. You do this by briefly shorting Bat to (I think) ARM, but double check that. If you don't polarize the regulator, it won't allow the generator to charge.

Chris, I believe what you said is incorrect. Regulators are usually if not always made specifically for positive or for negative ground applications. And when polarizing, one is polarizing the generator (not the regulator), so that the residual magnetism in the case and field poles, which gets the generator initially charging, is of the correct polarity.0

I Guess I Just Figure That Everybody Know What I Got, Sorry About That. I Have A 53 With A 308 And With 12 Volts. I Didn't Change The Regulator I Just Took It Off And Put Back On.0

Regulators are made positive ground, negative ground, and either/or, and are usually marked. You cannot change the polarity of a regulator, as this is governed by the dis-similar metals used in the points of the voltage coil. If you are sure you have put everything back exactly as taken off, then Murphy has struck again - "Any circuit that worked perfectly before disconnection, will fail upon re-connection". I suggest you double, and triple check. The wire from the Amp (Gen) light should go to the "Arm". terminal on the regulator, together with the heavy wire from the larger post on the generator. The wire from the battery should go to the "B" terminal, and the Fld terminal should be connected to the smaller terminal on the generator. If you denfinitely have these correct, try a jumper wire from Arm. to Bat. terminal, momentarily, and see if this brings it to life.
Good luck,

Are you sure that you have good clean connections at the regulator ? Somtimes it doesn't take very much to interupt the current flow. And do you have a good ground ?

Need more information..... What type of generator are you using? If you are using a Chrysler generator, there are several different types. Some WILL NOT charge when the Hudson is idling. This is because the size of the pulleys are not the same and you have somewhat made the generator "underdrive". It will start to charge at a higher RPM though. This may or may not be an issue with your setup.0

Make sure you reg is grounded. If you repainted or powder coated the finnner fender it may not be grounded to the rest of the car. Run a jumper wire from the neg ter to the reg plate and test0

I Had Another Car Guy Over Sunday, And He Could Not Get Over How Many Replies I Got On My Question In Less Then 24 Hours. I Told Him That That How Good Hudson People. I Will Not Be Able To Try A Few More Things Till Wendsday. Will Send Results Then.0

While As I Said I Finally Got To Look At It Today, Why Do Things Look Different On Another Day? I Found That I Did Have One Wire In Wrong Place, Problem Solved. I Guess That I Am Living Up To My Nickname. Haha0

The regulators are capable of being polarized. the process is in the repair manuals. Either Motor mate under Hudson or electrical section of any 50's book. It is done with the car wiring all in the right place and one touch from Batt. to Gen. terminals on the regulator and it is done. Most replacement regulators state they are capable of both + and - polarization and instruct you in the directions. Glad to see it was just a wire mix-up. Wrong polarizing can be damaging.0

However, as explained further above, the polarization procedure is to polarize the generator, not the regulator.0
