Just broke the gooseneck on my 308
I cranked one of the bolts down too hard and the thermistat was not in place. "Snap!"
Does anyone make / sell a replacement? Is there a more modern part I might use that will fit?
It's cast iron, and I've heard that's difficult to weld, but I don't really know.
Thanks;
-Chris

If you mean the water outlet on top of the block, that ought not to be hard to find, assuming you can settle for 'used'. I'd contact a few of the Hudson vendors that regularly advertise in the WTN.0

Yes, I mean the water outlet. Thanks very much.
Half the battle is learning what things are called. :-)

You can braze it sucessfully until you find one. Next time, shellac that thermostat in the outlet so it doesn't sneak out on ya.
Been there, done that, brazed it and found a good one.0 -
Try Ken Amman, WTN advertiser...:cool:0

Uncle Josh is right, they will break an ear off when they are pulled down on the thermostat. normally the housing is pulled against a nice flat surface and just dosen't snap. over tightening can of course cause damage as well but would typically be locallized to the bolt hole area bolts or tapped holes of the head. In the future, do as Uncle Josh suggests - gasket cement works great for the task, the type that comes with the brush in the can lid is quite handy.0 -

Well, I feel better now, not being the only one to make this mistake. I was really looking forward to Hudsoning this weekend. Ah well.
Hudzilla (Lance) is shipping me a replacement.. Thanks!
I may have someone try to weld it and use it as a backup. What is the difference between a weld and a braze?

Weld, -the parent metal melts with or without the addition of more metal. Hard to maintain original dimensions is this application.
Braze, -Brass rod melts at less than the melting temperature of iron, and runs into the crack and micropores of the iron via capillary action thus effecting a bond.0 -
Actually the Brazing process uses a brass based rod that fills a crack and adheres to the part being repaired and is quite strong, when done properly.
I would prefer welding, but it also needs to be done properly on cast iron. Welding melts the metal on both sides of the crack, so that it fuses together and uses a filler rod to fill any voids.

Me too - and not only on a Hudson engine. Fortunately I had 2 or 3 for Hudsons in the parts box - the ones on the 232 Rambler engine were, at the time, reasonably plentiful!!!

hahaha.. wow. Well that's the 3rd one I've found now. Glad they're still around. I'll probably buy a spare to go with my spare water pump, generator...
Many thanks again;
