Norm,
When I bought a gasket set from Dale Cooper last year, it included a rear crank seal that was made from a braided graphite material. Very good stuff, that seems to work great.
For sealing the bearing cap in place, I didn't use the wooden sticks, and chose to use the (I believe) cotton 'string' that I coated with silicone sealer before they were packed into their cavities.
I followed Walt Mordenti's instructions to a T (as I remember, I even called him at home from my garage during the job)....anyway, it doesn't leak a drop, so it all worked out great for me.0 -
Hi Herm I'm restoring a 54 Hornet Hollywood with a 308 engine in it.
I found a two piece neoprine seal from a older chrysler 318v 8
engine . It fits the cap and block like a glove . The seal sticks above the cap and block just enough. I have had the motor running several times
but not in service yet. No leaks yet from rear main. If you check it out
and install the seal in the cap and block you will think this is a factory
seal . That's how good it fits. Hudsonly duncan0 -
Got a part number on that?
Thanks0 -
Sorry no part number yet but will find it duncan0
-
Thanks apreciate it. I have a 308 apart and would like to see what the fit is like.0
-
If the 51 is the 51 engine the neoprine seal for the mopar or sbc or later Hudson wont fit. The 202 and later big 6 used the neo seal.0

For anyone who wants to try this, the part number for a Chrysler 318 '57 to '66 is as follows.
Fel-Pro BS40245
NAPA RS606
These are rubber.
For those who going first cabin.
BCA/National 5414 Big $$$0 -
ah, the old "poly" 318. good to know0

Hi Mars 55 Iasked about the 2 piece seal for the dodge 318 v8 engine.
I'm fron Alberta Canada we have a Bumper To Bumper in the town near where live soI phoned they said 1957- 89 same seal Fel -Pro #BS 40245
I buy all my parts there. duncan0 -
Duncan -I looked at the 318 seal at an auto parts store. The seal looked close to the right size but one of the halfs had extensions sticking out to the sides at each end of the seal an inch or so.Did you cut these off or was I looking at the wrong seal? Thanks. Norm0
-
Hi Norm Neither of my 2 halfs had extensions sticking out at each end.
When I got the seals they were not on a package .It is possible that I used
1/2 of two seal kits. 1 half from each kit. Ray
PS Did the 1/2 fit good in the rear main with lip facing inwords.
I got these seals from the mech. that did the valves for me.He took the no.off the seal and sent it away 318 dodge what the guy said. duncan0 -
Am I correct in assuming these seals would fit my 54 232 as well?0
-
Hi Jim Alberta
If the sealing grooves are the same on tne 232 as the308
yes .Try it and see. duncan sealing grooves meaning where the rope seal fits into.0 -
Jim Alberta Ijust thought of something after my last reply
are the crankshafts the same size on the 232 compared to the 308.
You would have to check it out and deside. duncan0 -
All six cylinder engines of 232, 262 and 308 cubic inches 1948 to 1954 have the same size main bearing crankshaft diameter of 2.5 inches. I am almost sure that the 1955 and 1956 308 cubic inches engines do too.
Here is a link to a picture of the seal.

marrs 55 If the 2 halfs of the rear main seal are a formed seal that should be the one I used . Cut off the 2 wings Give it a try thats what I did. No need to pound in this seal just put it in like you install a shell in a con rod.
I hope my info is helpful.0
